Freshman Steve Sylvia (Westerly, R.I./Westerly HS) was victorious in a pair of races as the Bentley University men’s swimming and diving team downed Babson College, 130-99, Wednesday night at the Dana Center pool.
Sylvia won the 50 yard freestyle by the narrowest of margins, one-hundredth of a second. His time of 23.07 was just slightly better than Edvard Arnet of Babson’s time of 23.08.
His margin of victory in the 100 freestyle wasn’t much more. His time of 51.19 barely bested Arnet again, who posted a time of 51.22.
Sylvia also swam the first leg in Bentley’s victorious 200 freestyle relay team. Sylvia, along with sophomores Michael Simoneau (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) and George Go (Manila, Philippines) and junior Joseph Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman HS) combined to post a winning time of 1:31.10, .17 of a second better than Babson’s second place time.
Go was also a winner in the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.59, while senior Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./Conard HS) took first in the 100 butterfly in 56.47.
Go and Ouellette also teamed with Simoneau and freshman Peter Belanger (Andover/Andover HS) to touch first in the 400 medley relay in 3:49.94.
Winning in the diving events for Bentley were senior Jon Andrews (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) off the one-meter board (260.70) and junior Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) off the three-meter (231.61).
The Falcons, who improved to 7-1 in dual meets, are back in action on Saturday afternoon at Keene State.
Senior Anne Kaduboski (Dedham/Dedham HS) won the 200 yard individual medley and 100 butterfly races as the Bentley University women’s swimming and diving team improved to 9-0 in dual meets with a 143-82 victory over Babson College Wednesday night at the Dana Center pool.
Kaduboski touched first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:16.58, more than five seconds better than teammate Heather Exley (Oceanside, Calif./Vista). She won the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.88, nearly six seconds better than Mallory Mosk of Babson.
Kaduboski also swam the third leg on the relay team that cruised to victory in the 400 medley relay with a time of 4:10.70, almost 17 seconds better than Babson’s second place team.
Freshman Kellen Power (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian HS) also won two individual races, touching first in the 1000 freestyle in 11:26.39, and the 100 freestyle in 57.31.
The Falcons also took the top three spots in the 1 meter dive, with sophomore Abby Mathews (Chelmsford/Chelmsford HS) taking the top spot with a score of 237.22
Bentley’s other individual winners were freshman Amy Shin (Lancaster/Nashoba Reg. HS) in the 200 free (2:06.64), sophomore Monika Drogosz (Unionville, Conn./Farmington HS) in the 50 free (25.84), sophomore Taryn Dooley (Feeding Hills/Agawam HS) in the 100 back (1:06.02), junior Susie Boretti (Westford/Westford Academy) in the 500 free (5:32.00), senior Emily Travers (Brentwood, N.H./ Exeter HS) in the three-meter diving (237.89) and freshman Erin Campbell (Marshfield/Marshfield HS) in the 100 breast (1:11.31).
