Kentucky Sweeps SCAD, Limestone

The University of Kentucky swimming and diving teams opened the second half of their 2010-11 season in style with commanding wins in a tri-meet against host-school Savannah College of Art and Design and Limestone College in Savannah, Ga.

The women’s team defeated SCAD 135-62 and Limestone College 135-55. The men’s side defeated SCAD 112-87 and Limestone College 134-55.

The UK women finished in the top two in nine of the 11 events they competed in, including sweeping the top three spots in three of them.

The women started the meet off right by taking first and second place in the 200 medley relay, led by the team of Claire Archibald, Lindsey Graessle, Mandy Myers and Chelsea Peterson who clocked in at 1:46.56.

Chatham Penrod won the 1,000 freestyle, while Myers won the 200 freestyle and Megan Eppler won the 50 freestyle. Freshman Kelly Titus won the 200 individual medley, while Kelcy Perry followed her in second place and Diana Norkus came in third.

Similarly, Kentucky earned first-, second- and third-place finishes in the 100 butterfly with Kristen Wilson, Lindsay Lash and Jenna Newsome, respectively.

The Cats had the top three swimmers in the 100 freestyle as well. Peterson won the event with a time of 51.95, followed by Anna Mattox in second and Penrod in third.

Kentucky senior Kayla Sergesketter won the 100 backstroke and Archibald won the 500 freestyle.

On the men’s side, Kentucky won five of the 11 events they competed in, and took both of the top two spots in four of those five events.

The men’s 200 medley relay team, similar to the women’s side, took the top two spots to open the tri-meet. The men’s team of Ramon Walton, Matt Russell, Jonathan Keltner and Colin Faris won the relay with a time of 1:32.04.

The Cats took the top three spots in both the 200 freestyle and 200 IM. In the 200 freestyle Stephen Wimmer took first, Travis Green followed him in second and John Bullock in third. William Heidler led Kentucky in the 200 IM, Matt Russell came in second and Tripp Crosthwaite came in third.

Wimmer’s day wasn’t done though. In addition to the 200 freestyle, Wimmer also came out victorious in the 100 freestyle by clocking in with a time of 46.59.

Walton won the 100 backstroke for Kentucky and Keltner came in second place.

The Cats won’t rest long. UK will head north to Columbia, S.C., for another tri-meet on Friday against host-South Carolina and the College of Charleston. Kentucky will then head north once again for another tri-meet Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C., their third in four days. In the third meet Kentucky will swim against host-school North Carolina and Clemson, both of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

The SCAD Savannah women's swimming teams split their double-dual meet against the University of Kentucky and Limestone College Wednesday (Jan. 5) evening at the Chatham County Aquatic Center.

Kentucky defeated No. 3 SCAD 135-62 and Limestone 135-55, while the Bees registered a 128-70 decision over the Saints.

SCAD improved to 3-6 while Kentucky went to 4-2 and Limestone suffered their first losses of the season at fell to 4-2.

Liz Roberts captured the 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.24) for the Bees.

SCAD returns to action Jan. 15 when they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., for a 1 p.m. double-dual meet against Daytona State College and Darton College.
