Senior Sarah Bopp registered gold-medal performance in the 500 and 1,000-yard freestyle events as Purchase College captured the 2011 Skyline Women’s Swimming Championship on Saturday evening at the Clark Athletic Center on the campus of SUNY College at Old Westbury. On the men’s side, Suny Maritime seized its fourth consecutive league title.
Bopp posted winning times of 5:52.39 and 12:34.34 and was tabbed the league’s Swimmer of the Year as Purchase amassed 118.5 points en route to its second Skyline Conference crown in three seasons. Also named Skyline Conference Swimmer of the Year was freshman Lauren Ouzounian of St. Joseph's College-Long Island as she shattered league records in the 100-yard backstroke (1:04.28) and 200-yard backstroke (2:19.09) and also captured the 200-yard individual medley (2:29.35).
Mount Saint Mary College finished second with 98 points, followed by St. Joseph’s College-Long Island (72.5), Suny Maritime College (31), College of Mount St. Vincent (23) and Suny College at Old Westbury (7).
Freshman Censi Danner of Mount Saint Mary College placed first in the 50-yard freestyle (25.67) and 100-yard freestyle events (57.44) and shared Rookie of the Year honors with teammate Allison Wyatt, who notched gold medal performances in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:11.21) and 200-yard breaststroke (2:38.32) events. Kristen Schoelermann of St. Joseph’s College-Long Island garnered Coach of the Year distinction, while Mount Saint Mary College earned the Sportsmanship Award.
On the men’s side, freshman Dominic Pereira registered victories in both the 100-yard breaststroke (1:06.96) and 200-yard individual medley (2:16.93) as four-time defending champion Suny Maritime College totaled 170 points to outdistance runner-up Suny College at Old Westbury (59). Mount Saint Mary College finished third with 56 points, followed by Purchase College (34) and College of Mount St. Vincent (29).
Pereira shared Swimmer of the Year honors with Brian Heitman of Mount Saint Mary College. Heitman seized gold in both the 500-yard freestyle (5:26.84) and 1,000-yard freestyle (10:58.30) events. Rookie of the Year accolades were presented to dual-event champion Michael Gavrilchin of Suny College at Old Westbury, Sigitas Rudokas of Suny College at Old Westbury garnered Coach of the Year honors, whileMount Saint Mary College earned the Sportsmanship Award.
Individual event winners were named to the All-Conference first-team, while second-team All-Conference honors were presented to the runner-up finishers in each event.
