Santa Rosa Men, DVC Women Capture Big 8 Titles

Galen Sollom-Brotherton won three events and helped Diablo Valley College capture the 400 and 800 freestyle relays but it wasn’t enough to overcome Santa Rosa College’s depth at the 2011 Big 8 Championships.   Jill McCormick’s squad overcame last year’s runner-up finish to capture its third Big 8 Conference title in four years.

Diablo Valley College denied Sierra College of a second-straight conference title.  Rick Millington’s squad rolled up 665.5 points to Sierra’s 621.5 and American River’s 617.

Santa Rosa’s Matt Stuhr, won the "Outstanding Performance of the Meet" award with his record breaking swim in the 200 Free (1:41.23). Freshman Sean Malley, also set both a new school and conference record in his 400 Medley Relay, lead-off 100 Back split, with a time of 51.45. Head Coach Jill McCormick was named Men's Coach of the Year.   Millington was named women’s coach of the year.

Sollom-Brotherton of Diablo Valley College won the 500 Freestyle (4:33.77), 400 IM (4:07.58), 1650 Free (16:45.15) and anchored DVC’s 400 and 800 Freestyle Relays.

Modesto’s Caitlin Denise was the women’s MVP.  She posted wins in the 50 freestyle and 200 IM and finished second to Rebekah Padilla in the 100 Butterfly.

The teams will now set their sights on CCCAA State Swimming Championships next weekend at East LA College, in Monterey Park. Competition begins Thursday 4/28 and goes through Saturday 4/30.
