Queens Univ. of Charlotte Men Win Catawba Relays

The Queens men’s swimming team scared the competition at the Catawba Boo Bash Relays for the 120 point victory. The Royals, who lost to Limestone Friday, Oct. 29th, bested the second place Saints by 14 points. On the women’s side, Queens was led by Caitlin Seed (Macedonia, Ohio) for the third consecutive meet, but fell short of first place Converse College.

The Royals women’s team had its best finishes in the first event, the 300-yard butterfly relay, and the 11th, the 400-yard medley relay. In the fly relay the women were led by Mary Strand (Mooresville, N.C.), Kelsey Smith (Charlotte, N.C.) swam the second leg and Seed anchored the team’s efforts. Queens posted a time of 3:17.01. Seed swam the fastest split of the entire race, 28.61. Limestone won the event.

Seed led the team in the 400 medley again swimming the fastest times in her leg. Smith swam second, Strand third and Nicole Bearden (Adrian, Mich.) anchored. Again, Queens was second behind Limestone with a time of 4:30.96.

The men’s team rolled over the competition. For the second consecutive night it all came down to the last events for the men. On Friday night at Limestone, Queens lost the dual after Limestone won the final relay, but this would not happen in the Boo Bash Relays. With the last two events to go, Queens held a 96-82 advantage.

Jeremy Gregory needed to win the 400-yard individual medley to give the Royals a chance to hold the lead. Gregory not only won, but beat Limestone’s Gene Magliaro by almost six whole seconds. The win extended the Queens lead to 18, outside the reach of Limestone no matter what the result in the last event.

In the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay Queens placed second, 3:15.81, for 10 points behind Limestone by exactly three seconds. This is the same event Queens lost to the Saints in the night before to drop the dual.

Earlier in the meet, Queens won the 300-yard butterfly relay, the 300-yard backstroke relay, the 300-yard breaststroke relay and the 400-yard medley relay. Gregory gave Queens a great start in the breaststroke relay opening with a first leg of 29.39 and 32.36.
