Assumption freshman Monique Haney (Rialto, CA) made a splash in her collegiate debut with a national-qualifying time of 2:09.80 in the 200-yard butterfly and the team won 11 events as the Greyhounds downed host WPI 164-118 Thursday night at the Hart Center in inter-divisional women's swimming and diving action. With the win, Assumption begins the 2010 campaign 1-0, while WPI starts the season 0-1.
Junior Alana Aubin (Taunton, MA) won two events for the Engineers. Aubin took first in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle events with a 26.65 and 57.40, respectively, while the 400-yard freestyle relay team of Aubin, Sonja Kent (West Boylston, MA), Heather Peruffo (Poughkeepsie, NY), and Sarah Dinwoodie (East Greenwich, RI) finished first with a time of 3:53.34.
Kent finished second in the women’s 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 11:21.86 and placed third (2:25.27) in the 200-yard butterfly. Dinwoodie placed third in the women’s 200-yard freestyle (2:10.07) and breaststroke (2:21.59).
In the backstroke, Peruffo and Kelin Song (Providence, RI) finished second (1:04.79) and third (1:07.98) in the 100-yard race, while Amanda Blom touched the pad third in the 100-yard (1:16.36) and 200-yard (2:49.70) breaststrokes.
First year swimmer, Taylor Briseno (Mansfield, MA) finished third in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:54.44 and 100-yard butterfly (1:06.50).
For the Greyhounds, Haney won two other individual events in addition to the butterfly; the 1000-yard freestyle (11:02.45) and 500-yard freestyle (5:13.88). Carly Eckles (Sherborn, MA) finished first in two events for Assumption as she took the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.63) and 200-yard backstroke (2:15.98). Haney teamed with Eckles, Jennifer Ryan (Weston, FL), and Dorian George (Holden, MA) to win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:57.17.
WPI hits the pool again October 30th when they travel to Colby-Sawyer for a 1pm meet. Assumption hosts Bridgewater State on October 22nd at 6pm.
