Converse Moves to 6-0

Converse College swimming would win every event in their first home meet ever this weekend. The team would beat Lenoir Rhyne University and Pfeiffer University by scores of 181 – 65 and 182-63 respectively.

The Valkyries would not only take first in every event but break 4 school records and capture 1 NCAA National B cut.

The meet would start with the 200 medley relay of Rhiannon Gluhosky (Summerville, SC), Hillary Johnson (Eau Claire, WI), Jess Mason (Greenville, SC) and Ashley Johnson (Florence, SC) taking first and nearly breaking the school record.

The next event would be won by Elizabeth Wright (Marietta, GA) breaking the school record by 4 seconds which she previously sent two meets ago.

Following, Gluhosky and Johnson would take first and second in the 200 freestyle and fall .6 short of a NCAA B cut.  Hillary Johnson and Jenni Russell would also go first and second respectively, in the 100 breaststroke. Yet, again Converse would capture first and second in the 200 Fly, with Christl Bradley and Lucianne Kimura touching the wall at 2:17.86 and 2:20.99, respectively.

Jess Mason, Jesse Pope, and Jana Gentry, and Tori Myers would go 1,2,4,5 respectively in the 50 free.  Ashley Johnson and Jess Mason would turn around an event later and take first and second in the 100 free. Mason would break the school record with a 54.77.

Kimura would take first in the 200 backstroke with a 2:16.57 going her lifetime best. Jenni Russell, Kate Mattil, and Hillary Johnson would go one two three in the 200 breaststroke.

Ashley Johnson would take first in her last individual event of 500 freestyle, breaking the school record with a 5:26.26.

To end the meet Gluhosky and Russell would go one two in the 400IM with Gluhosky going a NCAA B cut.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the way the team raced this weekend,” commented Coach Susan Kunkler. “The opportunity to be a part of the team’s first home meet ever was a blessing and much deserved for the young women.”

The Valkyries return to action next weekend at the Wingate Fall Frenzy in Charlotte, NC. Converse will face their toughest competition yet, which consists of College of Charleston, Savannah College of Art and Design, and Wingate University.
