he Washington & Jefferson College men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their 2010-11 campaigns by sweeping meets from York (Pa.) and Marymount on Saturday.
The Presidents' men recorded a 63-59 win over the host Spartans and knocked off Marymount by a 71-48 margin. The women's squad rolled past York (93-28) and Marymount (87-35).
The men's final scores came down to the final race and the Presidents' 400 freestyle relay team (3:21.42) out touched York by three-tenths of a second to secure the win. The relay was comprised of senior Christian Larson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills), juniors Keyton Kalakewich (Edwards, Colo./Charleroi) and Jonathan Weeks (Donora, Pa./Ringgold) and freshman Brian Gebhart (Gettysburg, Pa./Delone Catholic).
Weeks also picked up a pair of individual wins, claiming the 200 freestyle (1:52.36) and 200 butterfly (2:04.20) events.
The women's squad was paced by freshman Zoe Levenson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Allderdice), who set two pool records. She touched first in a record time of 1:00.98 in the 100 butterfly and also helped the 200 medley relay (1:53.46) earn a new pool-best mark in the opening race. Levenson was joined by junior C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and freshmen Rosemarie O'Connor (Staten Island, N.Y./Curtis) and Jenna Supp (Hollidaysburg, Pa./Hollidaysburg).
Junior Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) and sophomore Katlin Dagg (Mentor, Ohio/Hawken) were both double individual winners. Vogel notched first place in the 200 freestyle (1:59.62) and 200 breaststroke (2:30.22), while Dagg was victorious in the 200 butterfly (2:15.16) and 500 freestyle (5:23.50).
The W&J women return to the pool Wednesday for a conference-opening meet with Chatham (7:00 pm) before both teams open the home schedule next Saturday (1:00 pm) against Baldwin-Wallace.
