Allegheny Hires Huber

Allegheny College Director of Athletics and Recreation, Betsy Mitchell, announced Lance Huber as the College’s head men’s and women’s swimming and diving coach on Wednesday. Huber comes from an established background including his most recent position as the head coach at Luther College.

“I am pleased and excited to welcome Lance to the Allegheny community.” said Mitchell. “He brings a wealth of championship caliber experience to our historic swimming program. Lance is excited by the challenge to compete in the strongest conference in the country and sees it as a critical tool in getting the Allegheny teams back into the national picture.”

Throughout his nine-year tenure as head swimming and diving coach at Luther, Huber has a total of 13 combined Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) titles, including six straight for the women’s program and seven on the men’s side. During Luther’s conference championship run, he was named IIAC Coach of the Year six times and Liberal Arts Regional Coach of the Year five times. Huber has mentored 14 All-Americans, over 70 Liberal Arts individual champions and 35 national qualifiers.

“We are absolutely excited to become a part of the Allegheny family,” said Huber. “I am thrilled for the opportunity to take the program to a new level from the great foundation that has been established over the years.”

Prior to working at Luther, Huber was the men’s and women’s swimming coach at Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky from 1999-2001. He developed a nationally-ranked NAIA program in just two years, including five-time national champion.

Not only has Huber succeeded as a coach, he was also a very dominant swimmer at the University of South Dakota, where he graduated  in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Exercise Science. Huber was a 12-time All-American and 16-time North Central Conference (NCC) champion. He was named the NCC Male Sprinter of the Year in 1992 and earned NCC Male Swimmer of the Year in 1993. After graduation, Huber spent two years as an assistant coach at his alma mater.

“Lance impressed me and members of the Allegheny community with his knowledge of swimming, communication and motivation skills and the desire to live and work at a premier liberal arts college such as Allegheny,” said Mitchell. “Lance, his wife and two small children will be an outstanding addition to the larger Meadville community.”
