Washington & Jefferson Sweeps Saint Vincent

Washington & Jefferson College sophomore diver Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone) set a pool record on the 1-meter board during the Presidents’ swimming and diving sweep of Saint Vincent on Saturday at the Henry Memorial Natatorium.  The W&J men (3-4) recorded a 125-96 triumph, while the Presidents’ women (5-3) garnered a 129-100 win.

Haver set the pool record by compiling 366.85 points (11 dives) on the 1-meter board.  Her total broke the previous record set in 1989 by a John Carroll diver.

The W&J men were paced by senior Mark Sirkoch (New Kensington, Pa./Plum), who earned four victories.  Sirkoch helped the 200 medley relay team open with a victory in 1:42.54 and then touched first in the 100 (1:04.26) and 200 (2:22.64) breaststroke events.  He concluded his day as a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay squad (1:31.09).

The women’s squad was led by freshman Jami Andrews’ (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) three wins.  Andrews swam a leg on the opening 200 medley relay win (1:56.81) before collecting victories in the 100 (1:13.60) and 200 (2:40.07) breaststrokes.

Sophomores C.J. Corcoran (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) also swam on the winning 200 medley relay before notching individual wins.  Corcoran took first in the 100 butterfly (1:03.58), while Vogel was victorious in the 100 freestyle (55.54) and 200 IM (2:14.41).

Freshman Katlin Dagg (Mentor, Ohio/Hawken) was another double winner for the Presidents.  She grabbed first place in the 200 butterfly (2:17.98) and 500 freestyle (5:27.90).

The men’s squad was also boosted by freshman Joe Weiland’s (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) double-victory afternoon.  Weiland claimed first in the 100 (56.79) and 200 (2:11.15) backstroke events.  Classmate Patrick O’Toole (Butler, Pa./Fox Chapel) touched first in the 500 (5:01.76) and 1,000 (10:24.36) freestyles, while senior Andrew Forish (Greensburg, Pa./Hempfield) joined Sirkoch on the 200 freestyle relay and also notched a victory in the 100 freestyle (51.04).

Junior Brandon Smith (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) added wins in the 200 freestyle (1:51.17) and 200 IM (2:05.09).

W&J hosts Bethany on Wednesday (6:00 pm) in a PAC dual meet.
