Westminster Sweeps Saint Vincent

The Westminster College men's and women's swimming and diving teams really left their mark in a dual-meet sweep at Saint Vincent on Saturday. The Titans broke a total of eight pool records at Saint Vincent's Resnick Pool as the men won 140-101 and the women won 128-113.

Westminster's men team improves to 5-2 on the season and Saint Vincent's men's team falls to 1-8, while the Titan women's team ups its record to 6-2 and Saint Vincent falls to 3-6.

In addition to the eight pool records (2 men's, 6 women's), Westminster won a combined 17 events (9 men's, 8 women's) and there were also seven other events that the Titans deployed exhibition swimmers that swam faster than Saint Vincent's first-place finishers.

Junior Courtney Herdt (Beaver Falls, Pa./Beaver Falls) was the only Titan to set two individual pool records as she touched first in the 100- (1:08.70) and 200-yard (2:29.41) breaststrokes.

Sophomore Caitlin Lehberger (New Wilmington, Pa./Wilmington) also won two events by taking the 100 backstroke (1:04.00), while her first-place time in the 100 freestyle (55.02) was a pool record. Lehberger's exhibition time in the 500 freestyle (5:24.24) was faster than Saint Vincent's first-place finisher.

Freshman Lyndsey Vogler (Beaver Falls, Pa./Blackhawk) captured two events, the 1,000 freestyle (11:22.44) and a pool-record time in the 200 backstroke (2:17.26).

The two other pool records for the Titan women were exhibition times from sophomore Sierra Beecher (Newville, Pa./Big Spring) in the 400 IM (4:50.26) and the 400 freestyle relay (3:46.24).

Rounding out the women's event winners are freshman Carolyn Swarlis (Pittsburgh, Pa./Avonworth), who won the 200 butterfly (2:23.05) and posted an exhibition time in the 100 butterfly (1:02.21) that was a meet best. Senior Maile Kirkpatrick (Meadville, Pa./Meadville) won the 200 freestyle (2:05.70).

Sophomore Mark Brooks (Youngstown, Ohio/Boardman) was a part of both of the men's team pool records, by winning in the 200 backstroke (2:01.40) and helping out on the meet-best exhibition time in the 400 freestyle relay (3:18.20).

Senior Brett Gerthoffer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Shaler) and sophomore Mike Barringer (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) both swam on the 400 freestyle relay and also won events, the 100 breaststroke (1:05.18) and the 100 freestyle (49.38), respectively.

Barringer won a third event by anchoring the 200 medley relay (1:40.71) team, swimming behind freshman Alan Nedley (White, Pa./Connellsville). Nedley also won the 200 freestyle (1:49.83) and posted a meet-best exhibition time in the 400 IM (4:29.56).

Rounding out the Westminster men's single-event winners are senior Chase Saraiva (Camp Hill, Pa./Cedar Cliff) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:53.75), sophomore Todd Slobodnyak (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) in the 100 backstroke (56.39), sophomore Kevin Ammon (Parkesburg, Pa./Coatesville) in the 50 freestyle (23.25) and freshman Will Stiglitz (Franklin, Pa./Cranberry) in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.48). Junior Devin Gannon (Glenshaw, Pa./Shaler) swam fastest in the 500 freestyle (5:04.85) with an exhibition time.

Westminster will host Grove City on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the final home meet of the season.
