January 24th, 2010

UNC

The Tar Heel swimming and diving teams bounced back into the win column Sunday afternoon by sweeping Duke at the Duke Aquatics Center.  The UNC women beat Duke 171-124 and the men defeated the Blue Devils 1615-137.5 as both Carolina teams extended their long winning streaks over the nearby rivals.

Even after competing the day before against the defending ACC champions from the University of Virginia, the UNC swimmers and divers were able to pull out another win against the Duke Blue Devils.   Carolina’s men are now 9-1 overall on the season and 5-1 in the ACC. The women are now 8-2 on the campaign and 5-1 in the conference meet.

The victories earned Carolina two points in the 2009-10 Carlyle Cup race, giving the Tar Heels a six-point advantage in the competition.  The Carlyle Cup, now in its 10th year, is sponsored by Carlyle & Company and matches the two schools in head-to-head competition in 24 sports.  UNC now leads this year’s race 8.5 points to 2.5.

Both UNC teams began the meet with first place finishes in the 400-yard medley relay giving them an early lead.

Duke

Another packed house was on hand Sunday as fans were treated to Carlyle Cup action between Duke and North Carolina. Prior to the meet, the Blue Devils seniors and their parents were recognized and thanked for four years of dedication to the Duke swimming program. But the Tar Heels played spoiler, downing both the Duke men and women.

The best race of the afternoon came early on, with junior Ashley Twichell turning in a dominating performance in the 1000 freestyle. At the 800 yard mark, Twichell and Kautra Harvey of North Carolina were neck-and-neck. But throwing in a remarkable surge, Twichell broke away to win the race in a new pool-record time of 9:54.45. Jackie Fasano wouldn’t let the Tar Heels put a damper on her Senior Day, locking up third place in the 1000 freestyle.

In the men’s 1000 free, Carolina’s Joe Kinderwater set a new pool record with a time of 9:16.40 while Duke’s Nathan French and Andrew Clark took third and fourth places in the event.

Freshman Haley Read set a season-best mark in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:54.70. Senior Sean Smith stopped the clock in 1:43.01 to take fourth place in the 200 freestyle for the men.

The Duke men took control in the 100 backstroke as senior Murillo Adrados fought to a first-place finish while his junior teammate, Spencer Booth, took third.

Emily Barber was faced with stiff competition in the 100 breast, as North Carolina’s Lauren Moriaty set a new pool record with a time of 1:03.50, but the Duke freshman was able to pick up a third-place finish. On the men’s side, senior David Carlson notched a second-place finish with a time of 58.24.

In the women’s 200 butterfly, the senior duo of Shannon Beall and Elizabeth Bellew took second and third place, while the men’s race saw senior Eric Ness take fourth place.

In a repeat performance of Friday night’s meet against Virginia, freshman Benjamin Hwang won the 50 freestyle in a blistering 20.99.

After the diving break, Shannon Beall continued her outstanding Senior Day by taking second place in the 100 freestyle with a time of 52.55. For the men, Spencer Booth provided some excitement for the home fans, shooting into first place while Hwang took third.

Sophomore Meghan Dwyer and freshman Emily Kintz got the Blue Devil women back into the meet with second- and third-place finishes in the 200 backstroke. Moving on to the women’s 200 breaststroke, Meredith Bannon made the most of her final home meet taking second place.

In the 500 freestyle, Twichell came up just .45 seconds short of first place, holding on to second in a time of 4:54.89.

Nick Garvy notched an important win for the Blue Devils in the 100 butterfly, posting a time of 49.83.

In her final home swim, Beall won the 200 IM with a quick 2:06.39.

As has been the case much of the season, Nick McCrory won both diving events on the men’s side while Abby Johnston took top honors for the women.
