The University of Vermont swimming and diving team fell to visiting Northeastern on Saturday afternoon at Forbush Natatorium, 171-127. Saturday was "Senior Day" for six Catamounts swimming in their final home meet of the season.
Junior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) led the way for Vermont (8-6, 2-3 America East) with a pair of wins on the afternoon. Weaver swept the backstroke events, winning the 100 (59.51) and 200 (2:07.39) while also finishing second in the 100 butterfly.
Senior Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) set a new pool record for the second consecutive week by winning the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:59.43. Freshman Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y.) finished second in the event, while taking first place in the 1,000 freestyle in 10:28.92. MacMillan would also finish second in the 200 freestyle, while Gardner placed second in the 200 IM.
The Catamounts also earned three additional second place finishes, as sophomore Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C.) came in second in the 200 butterfly, sophomore Lauren Colby (Andover, Mass.) in the one meter dive and the 200 medley relay team as well.
Prior to Saturday's meet seniors MacMillan, Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) Chelsea Davidoff (Los Angles, Calif.), Blayne Knapp (Glens Falls, N.Y.), Amanda Murphy (Burlington, Mass.) and Hayley Perelman (Milwood, N.Y.) were all honored. The group has helped guide the Cats to four winning seasons during their time on campus, as they are the most successful class in the history of the program. Over the last four years they have helped Vermont record 39 victories and it improve its finish at conferences each season.
The six seniors will also be honored at the 2010 Rally Awards on Tuesday, May 11 at 7:30 p.m.
Vermont returns to action next Saturday when it travels to face Rhode Island in a meet with Bryant, starting at 12 p.m.
