Bentley Men
Senior Willie Connolly (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley HS) helped Bentley University win the 200 yard medley relay, finished first in the 200 backstroke and recorded a second in the 200 individual medley, helping the Falcons post a 125-109 victory over the College of Saint Rose Sunday afternoon at the Dana Center pool.
Bentley recorded only five firsts in the meet, but used its superior depth (nine seconds, nine thirds and seven fourths) to claim the victory.
Connolly’s times in both the 200 back (2:01.54) and the 200 IM (2:04.35) were both the best times of the season by a Bentley swimmer in those events, each bettering performances he had achieved earlier in the season.
In the 200 medley relay, Connolly combined with senior Sam Laden (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire HS), sophomore Joe Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman HS) and freshman George Go (Manila, Philippines) for a winning effort of 1:41.66.
The Falcons’ success in the two diving events played a key role in the victory with Bentley outscoring the Golden Knights 22-7. Junior Jon Andrews (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) captured the one-meter with a score of 246.60 and sophomore Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) was number one in the three-meter (251.05). Both were season-best performances for a Falcon diver.
Bentley’s other win in the meet was posted by junior Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./ Conard HS) with a time of 22.78 seconds in the 50 free.
Team season bests were also recorded by Ouellette in the 500 free (5:05.56) and freshman Mike Culkin (Avon, Conn./Avon HS) in the 200 butterfly (2:10.11). Both finished second in those events.
Bentley, 6-2, will swim at Babson College Wednesday at 6 pm.
