Freshman Adam Maczewski set a school record in the 50 back, as the University of Pittsburgh men’s swimming and diving team leads Maryland and Penn State after the first day of competition in their two-day, tri-meet at Trees Pool, this evening.
Maczewski swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay, and touched the wall at 22.94. His time eclipsed the previous school record set by teammate Andrzej Dubiel (22.97), last season.
Just shy of setting a school record themselves, Pitt’s 200 medley relay team won the first swimming event of the evening with a time of 1:30.67. Led by Maczewski, the squad included senior Jonathan Buchanan, sophomore Jake Lucas and Dubiel.
Later, Maczewski won the 100 back (49.19), and Dubiel placed second.
In another near record-setting performance, the 200 free relay turned in a first-place performance at 1:21.39. The squad included Lucas, sophomore Otto Pagel, senior Justin Corvin and Dubiel.
Lucas was close to setting a school record in the 100 fly, clocking in at 48.62 while the 1998 standard sits at 48.36. Junior Alex McLaren placed third in that same event.
On the 3M board, junior Collin Forner led three Panthers with a first-place score of 344.05. Classmates Zane McLain and Jason Erdeljac trailed for second and third, respectively.
Placing second in the 400 IM, Buchanan swam the fastest time of the season for Pitt with a 4:03.26 finish in the event. Senior Charlie Zettel won his heat of the 400 IM and placed fourth overall. Buchanan would also place second in the 100 breast.
Pagel recorded another second-place finish for Pitt, touching the wall at 45.64 in the 100 free. Freshman Hussein Medhat trailed for third and Corvin placed fifth in the same event.
Action resumes at Trees Pool at 9 a.m. with the women’s 3M diving event.

Junior Laura Barnes recorded two first-place finishes on the day, as the University of Pittsburgh women’s swimming and diving team leads two of three teams after the first day of competition in their two-day quad meet at Trees Pool, this evening.
The lone individual event winner on the women’s squad, Barnes won the 100 breast with a season-best time of 1:03.89. She was also the second leg of an exciting 200 medley relay race to start the swimming events. Her split in the relay was 29.37 in the 50 breast.
As a whole, the 200 medley team outlasted the field with a time of 1:44.39. The squad was made up of freshman Joanna Budzis, Barnes and juniors Caitlin Trant and Kristen McMullen.
Later, freshman Kelsey Herbst moved into second in the final lap of the 1650 free, and was out-reached at the wall by a Penn State swimmer. Herbst claimed second in the event while her time of 16:45.36 was a personal- and team-best on the season.
In 1M diving, junior Mallory Mullady, senior Margo Ekstrom and junior Morgan Speece claimed second through fourth in the event, respectively. Mullady scored 25.65 points for the Panthers.
The day’s events concluded with a third-place finish from the 200 free relay team (1:35.22). The squad included sophomore Yolandi Van Rooyen, freshman Elena Spak, Budzis and McMullan.
