Carleton Men
First-year Erik Klontz (Bethesda, Md./Chevy Chase-Bethseda) won the 50-yard freestyle and swam the opening leg of the victorious 200-yard freestyle relay as the Carleton College men’s swimming and diving team opened a tough weekend of competition at Gustavus Adolphus College. Klontz added a second-place performance in both the 100-yard freestyle and the 200-yard medley relay, where he swam the night’s fastest anchor leg.
In the winning freestyle relay, Klontz was followed by junior Andrew Mering (Baraboo, Wis.), senior Alan Goodyear (Cobham, United Kingdom/Epsom College), and first-year Mamoru Kanazawa (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary’s International).
Eric Brenner (Jr./Plymouth, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) posted season-best scores as the top finisher on the 1-meter and 3-meter diving boards.
The Knights will be right back in the water on Saturday, Jan. 16 for a dual meet against Saint John’s University. Knights Online hopes to carry a live video webcast beginning at 12 p.m.
Carleton Women

This was the Knights first dual meet setback against another Division III opponent since the Gusties edged Carleton by 15 points on Jan. 27, 2007.
Molly Spence (Fy./Tacoma, Wash.) picked up the first individual title for Carleton, touching the wall first in the 1000-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 10:34.61.
Maggie Alexander (So./Tigard, Ore./Tualatin) was the lone multi-event victor, posting first-place honors in both the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races.
Kale Zicafoose (Jr./Omaha, Neb/Westside) continued her strong season by winning the 100-yard backstroke in 59.2, good for a season-best time. She placed second in the 200-yard backstroke.
Kate Alexander (Sr./Tigard, Ore./Tualatin) returned to competition and took top honors in the 100-yard breaststroke with a season-best figure of 1:08.13.
Kelsey Ihinger (So./Eden Prairie, Minn.) added a victory in the 200-yard butterfly, and Sydney Weydemeyer (Jr./Santa Fe, N.M.) won the 3-meter diving competition.
The Knights host the College of Saint Benedict in a dual meet on Saturday, Jan. 16. Knights Online hopes to have a live video webcast from Thorpe Pool beginning at 12 p.m.
