Towson Defeats Delaware

Sophomore Caroline Baker (Tuscarora H.S./Adamstown, Md.) set the Towson University record in the one-meter and three-meter diving events to lead the Tigers (9-1, 5-0) to a 176-124 victory over the University of Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association meet at the Rawstrom Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

Baker, who also qualified for the NCAA Zone regionals in both events, scored 295.43 points in the three-meter event and 303.97 points in the one-meter event.

“Our divers were outstanding today and really helped us to the win,” Coach Pat Mead said. “Caroline had an outstanding meet and the other divers performed great as well. They deserve a lot of praise along with our diving coach Maureen Mead.”

While Baker won both diving events, sophomore Lauren Ray (Harper Creek H.S./Ceresco, Mich.) also had an outstanding effort against the Blue Hens. She scored 277.65 points in the three-meter event for a third place finish while her score of 266.62 points earned a fifth place effort in the one-meter event.

Junior Meredith Budner (Walter Johnson H.S./Rockville, Md.) won the 200-yard butterfly by completing the event in 2 minutes, 6.42 seconds before posting a victory in the 100-yard freestyle in 51.76 seconds. She also helped the Tigers win the 400-yard freestyle relay by swimming the anchor leg as Towson posted a time of 3:33.17.

Sophomore Cari Czarnecki (Cocalico H.S./Denver, Pa.) won a pair of events against the Blue Hens. She posted a time of 2:09.63 to win the 200-yard individual medley while recording a mark of 57.80 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly.

Junior Brooke Golden (New Windsor, Md.) led the Tigers in the 200-yard freestyle by winning the event in a time of 1:53.44 while junior Erica Hall (Martin H.S./Rockville, Md.) finished second with a mark of 1:54.95. Golden also finished second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:02.64 while junior Kayla Zeller (Hempfield H.S./Landisville, Pa.) won the event with a season-best time of 4:57.48.

Senior Kathryne Chalikis (Hunterdon Central H.S./Flemington, N.J.) took first place in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.64 seconds while sophomore Tana King (Paul VI Catholic H.S./Oak Hill, Va.) followed with a second place effort, touching the wall in 24.76 seconds.

Sophomore Maggie Macedonia (Bishop O’Connell H.S./Annandale, Va.) won the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:09.15 while junior Megen Donovan (Archbishop Wood H.S./Warminster, Pa.) earned a first place effort in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:21.69).

The Tigers will return to Burdick Pool for their first home meet of the season on Saturday afternoon when they host George Mason at 1 p.m.


Delaware

Despite a victory by senior Drew Pallace (McDonogh School/Baltimore, Md.) in the 1000-yard freestyle, the Tigers were unable to earn their first win of 2010 as they dropped a 228-70 Colonial Athletic Association decision against the University of Delaware at the Rawstrom Natatorium on Saturday afternoon.

Pallace posted a career-best time of 9:52.63 to lead the Tigers in the 1000-yard freestyle event. He also helped the Tigers to second place finishes in the 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays.

Senior Devin Kirby (Hammonton H.S./Atco, N.J.) earned a win in the 50-yard freestyle by completing the event in 20.96 seconds and also swam the anchor leg in both of the Tigers’ relays.

Senior T.J. Farley (Westminster H.S./Westminster, Md.) posted a third place effort in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.59 while sophomore Eric Sparks (Topeka H.S./Topeka, Kansas) finished third in the 100-yard freestyle in 49.07 seconds.

Senior Bradley Bolin (Temple City H.S./Covina, Calif.) placed third in the one-meter diving event with a score of 230.17 points.

The Tigers will return to Burdick Pool for their first home meet of the season on Saturday afternoon when they host George Mason at 1 p.m.
