America East - Day 2

UMBC

The UMBC men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams broke three more school records as they finished Day 2 action of the 2010 America East Championships in Boston.

The men lead with 292 points, followed by Boston University (277), Binghamton (252), Stony Brook (153) and Maine (71).

The women sit in third with 226 points, behind Boston U. (288) and New Hampshire (239). The Retrievers are followed by Vermont (160), Binghamton (139.5), SBU (115.5) and Maine (94).

The women's 200 free relay of senior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee), sophomore Ashley Miller (New Smyrna Beach, Fla./New Smyrna Beach), junior Erin Wohlers (Baldwinsville, N.Y./Charles W. Baker) and sophomore Abbey McKenney (Wilmington, Del./Brandywine) earned silver in 1:34.72, a UMBC record.

The men's relay of senior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy), sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), freshman Steve Gallagher (Sinking Spring, Pa/Wilson) and junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) also earned silver in a school record time of 1:21.71. The time breaks the oldest record on the UMBC books, previously set in 1991.

McKenney finished the women's 50 free fourth in a UMBC record time of 23.46, while Miller finished eighth in 24.06.

Senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) won the men's 200 IM in a NCAA-provisional qualifying mark of 1:48.69. Junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) earned bronze in 1:50.16, while fellow junior Dan Weston-Dawkes (Ellicott City, Md./Wilde Lake) and freshman Herol Marjak (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Sec Science School) finished fifth and eighth, respectively.

In the men's 50 free final, Gallagher swam the eighth-fastest race in UMBC history and earned bronze in 21.00, while Jason Mattingly touched fourth in 21.05 and Jones placed fifth in 21.12.

In the women’s 500 free, Maccherola  earned silver in a time of 4:54.66, while junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep) came from behind to finish third in 4:56.44. Senior Jennifer Esposito (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst/C.W. Post) placed sixth in 4:57.51.

In the men's 500 free final, sophomore Mark Garbowski (Cherry Hill, NJ./Cherry Hill West) finished sixth in 4:36.58, while junior Mat Carson (Toronto, Ontario, Canada/Silverthorn Collegiate Institute) finished seventh in 4:38.42.

Freshman Tara Morrissette (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) earned bronze in the women's 200 IM in a time of 2:05.75, while senior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) finished fourth in 2:06.60. Morrissette’s time is the third-fastest in school history.

In diving, junior Amanda Shinholser (Burtonsville, Md./Springbrook) scored 193.85, while freshman Victoria Monetta (Lawrenceville, Ga/Central Gwinnett) scored a career-best 176.95.


Vermont

The Catamounts sit in fourth place after the second day of the America East Swimming and Diving Championships hosted by Boston University. Vermont has 160 points heading into the weekend, while the host Terriers lead the standings with 288 points.

Vermont had three of the top nine finishers in the 500 freestyle, as senior Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) led the way with a fourth place finish in a time of 4:56.57. Classmate Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) finished just behind MacMillan in fifth in 4:56.73. Freshman Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y.) set a new UVM freshmen record and posted a lifetime best by winning the consolation in a time of 4:56.28.

The Catamounts also posted three of the top 11 finishers in the three-meter diving final. Freshman Melissa Wheeler (Roanoke, Va.) led the way with a seventh-place finish and a score of 418.15. Sophomore Lauren Colby (Andover, Mass.) placed 10th in the event and was followed by freshman Susannah Gruner (Kingston, N.Y.) in 11th.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Evarts (Vergennes, Vt.) placed 14th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.56, while the 200 freestyle relay team made up of Clark, Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) Evarts and Hannah Center (Chevy Chase, Md.) came in fourth with a time of 1:35.93.

"We had a very strong night. Our girls fought hard and we are set up very well for tomorrow," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer.
