Bentley Men

Bentley University junior Jon Andrews (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) repeated as three-meter champion Friday at the Northeast-10 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships, helping the Falcons take the lead in the team standings after the first day of competition at the Southern Connecticut State University Hutchinson Natatorium.

Bentley amassed a total of 269.5 points and leads the host team by 42.5 points. The College of Saint Rose is third with 159.5, Adelphi University is fourth with 124, and St. Michael’s College, Le Moyne College and Pace University round out the field.

Andrews captured the three-meter diving with a score of 414.35 points, besting Southern Connecticut’s Ryan Cutler by more than 31 points. Bentley sophomore Mike Walsh (South Salem, N.Y./John Jay HS) took the bronze with a 353.80.

Bentley had a pair of second-place finishes during Friday’s competition, in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:28.44) and the 400 medley relay (3:36.34). In both, coach Mary Kay Samko went with the quartet of junior Egen Ouellete (West Hartford, Conn./Conard HS), sophomore Joe Frantel (Canandaigua, N.Y./Marcus Whitman HS) and seniors Sam Laden (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire HS) and Willie Connolly (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley HS).

Connolly and Laden each registered a fourth-place finish in an individual event, Connolly in the 200 individual medley (2:00.00) and Laden in the 50 free (22.38 seconds). Ouellette was fifth in the 50 free, a hundredth of a second back of Laden, and sophomore Matt Wessels (Epsom, N.H./Bishop Brady HS) was sixth in the 200 IM (2:02.14).

The championships continue through Sunday night.

Bentley Women

Freshman Abby Mathews (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS) had the highest finish for the Bentley University women’s swimming and diving team during the first day of competition at the Northeast-10 Conference Swimming and Diving Championships Friday at Southern Connecticut State’s Hutchinson Natatorium.

Mathews earned silver in the one-meter diving, with her score of 373.45 placing her about 27 points back of the winner, Amanda Burden of Southern Connecticut. Bentley had three of the top six finishers in the event with junior Emily Travers (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter HS) fourth (361.05) and freshman Shelly D’Aleo (Enfield, Conn./Suffield Academy) sixth (339.05).

Bentley’s other top six performance in an individual event was achieved by freshman Jessica Hodsdon (Brewer, Maine/Brewer HS), with a fourth in the 200 yard individual medley (2:14.51).

In the 400 medley relay, the Bentley foursome of Hodsdon, junior Anne Kaduboski (Dedham, Mass./Dedham HS) and freshmen Taryn Dooley (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam HS) and Monika Drogosz (Unionville, Conn./Farmington HS) were third in 4:05.23.

Drogosz and Hodsdon were also part of Bentley’s 200 free relay team, which finished fifth in 1:42.73. Joining them were sophomore Susie Boretti (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) and senior Carolyn Connolly (Palm Desert, Calif./Palm Desert HS).

Bentley finished day one in fourth place out of eight teams, with 161.5 points. Southern Connecticut State had a meet-best 320 points, good for a 119.5-point lead over second-place Saint Rose, and Le Moyne, with 166, will start the second day just front of the Falcons.

The championships will continue through Sunday.
