UNC Wilmington broke a pair of pool records and picked up a sweep of Colonial Athletic Association rival Old Dominion in swimming and diving action on Saturday at the Seahawk Natatorium.
The Seahawks men (2-1, 1-0 CAA) topped the visiting Monarchs (1-1, 0-1 CAA), 167.5-127.5, while the women (2-1, 1-0 CAA) posted an impressive 171-121 victory over the Lady Monarchs (1-1, 0-1 CAA).
UNCW wasted little time getting the meet rolling as the women’s 200 Medley Relay team of senior Caitlin Kirsteier, and sophomores Anna Munger, Mattie Riley and Caroline Huber opened with a pool-record time of 1:45.28, breaking the previous venue mark of 1:47.26 set in 1993 by James Madison.
Kirsteier also set another pool record when she clocked in at 55.61 in the 100 Butterfly. She also added a win in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 24.08.
Leading the Seahawk men with a pair of wins was sophomore Gavin Spake who captured the 1,000 Freestyle (9:46.49) and later in the meet he swam 4:44.59 to win the 500 Freestyle.
Picking up wins for the men were junior Bobby Guntoro (100 Backstroke), sophomore Brandon Hicks (200 Butterfly), freshman Ray McGorry (200 Breaststroke) and junior Tucker Waldron (100 Butterfly).
For the women, sophomores Kasey Richardson (10:27.22), Huber (1:55.18), Munger (100 Freestyle) and Hilary Fritz (100 Backstroke) posted wins.
In diving, sophomore Meg Gildea and senior Matt Arb swept both the 1 and 3-meter boards. Gildea fashioned scores of 234.83 in the 1-meter and later a score of 238.65 in the 3-meter. Arb scored 298.58 in the 1-meter and 269.17 in the 3-meter dive.
The Seahawks return to the pool on Oct. 31, when they host Emory and Houston in a pair of dual meets beginning at 10:30 a.m.
