The University of Toledo swimming and diving team recorded a 180-120 win over the University of Toronto, but fell short in its bid to knock off national power Michigan Friday, losing a double-dual meet 170-120 with the Wolverines in Ann Arbor, MI.
Sophomore Laura Lindsay (Uniontown, OH) starred for Toledo, claiming the Rockets' first victory of the afternoon as she finished first in the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:03.90. Later, she out-touched Michigan's Julia Andracki in the 200 breaststroke in a time of 2:19.51, winning by one-tenth of a second. Her time in the 100 is less than a second away from an NCAA 'B' qualifying time.
Junior co-captain Amanda Thompson (Monroe, MI) picked up the other event victory for the Rockets, as she hit the wall first in the 100 butterfly in a time of 56.74, two-tenths of a second ahead of Michigan's Caitlin Dauw.
"Both Laura and Amanda had a fantastic meet," said head coach Lars Jorgensen. "Laura is getting close to NCAA 'B' qualifying standards, which is really good for this early in the season. Overall I thought we were very competitive."
Freshman Kenzie Bagan (Roanoke, IN) finished a close second in the 200 butterfly, just .22 behind Dauw. Classmate Carly Harter (North Huntingdon, PA) was also second in the 200 free in a time of 1:52.28 and was the runner-up in the 200 IM in 2:08.30.
The 200 medley relay team of senior Ashley Cusack (Willow Spring, IL), Lindsay, Thompson and senior Katie White (Leland, MI) had a strong showing as well, finishing second in 1:44.30. The 400 free relay team, led by Harter, White, freshman LesLee Winfield (Toledo, OH) and senior Caitlin Cormack (Bedford, OH) also placed second.
Junior Jacy Dyer (Lebanon, PA) finished third in the 1000 free in a time of 10:11.87, White also recorded a third-place showing in the 50 free in 24.03. Cusack had a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 back (57.60) and 200 back (2:06.33).
Toledo returns to the pool for its first MAC dual meet of the season at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30 as the Rockets travel to Muncie, IN to take on Ball State.
