UNC-Wilmington Falls to Duke

Wilmington, N.C. , October 21st, 2009

Despite a loss to Duke in their season-opening dual meet, the UNC Wilmington swimming and diving teams fared well as junior Bobby Guntoro, senior Caitlin Kirsteier and junior Kobi Salinas were honored by the Colonial Athletic Association with swimmer and diver-of-the-week honors.

Guntoro, who was named Co-Swimmer-of-the-Week, won a pair of individual events and swam legs of winning relays. The Seahawks opened their meet with Duke by breaking the pool’s 200 Medley Relay record with time of 1:32.76 as Guntoro swam the leadoff leg. The junior then captured the 100 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly with times of 51.26 and 51.22, respectively. UNCW closed out the meet winning the 200 Freestyle Relay with mark of 1:23.18 as Guntoro swam the second leg.

Kirsteier, who earned Swimmer-of-the-Week honors, opened her season in grand fashion, winning a pair of individual events and swimming legs of two winning relays, including one that set a pool record. Kirsteier won the 100 Freestyle with a time of 52.03 and then the three-time reigning CAA 100 Fly champion won the same event with a time of 55.83. Kirsteier swam a leg of the winning 200 Medley Relay and then swam the anchor leg of the pool record-setting 200 Freestyle Relay that finished in 1:35.39, breaking a record that was set in 1984.

Salinas, the CAA Men’s Diver-of-the-Week, scored 288.83 points in finishing second in the 1-meter dive and then finished third in the 3-meter board with 317.55 points.

The Seahawks open their home schedule this weekend with a pair of meets beginning on Oct. 23 with a non-conference meet against Gardner-Webb at 4 p.m. UNCW then has a short turn around before taking on CAA rival Old Dominion on Saturday in a 1 p.m. start at the Seahawk Natatorium.
