The University of Vermont swimming and diving team opened the 2009-10 season on Friday night, sweeping a four-team meet at Army. The Catamounts topped Boston College (158-142), Army (176-123) and Stony Brook (179-121) to start the season 3-0. Junior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) paced Vermont with three wins.
"I am very pleased with the final results from tonight's meet," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer. "Our girls have been working very hard and they were very focused heading into tonight, although we still have a lot of work ahead of us."
Weaver took first in the 200 IM (2:12.09) and the 100 (58.56) and 200 (2:06.63) backstroke events. The Cats also got a pair of wins out of senior Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) in the 100 (53.90) and 200 (1:54.24) freestyle events and freshman Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y.) in the 500 (5:06.67) and 1,000 (10:25.19) free.
Vermont also picked up seven second-place showings. Senior Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) came in second in the 500 and 1,000 free, while sophomore Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C.) also placed second in both the 100 and 200 butterfly events. Freshman Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y.) was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke and the Cats also finished second in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
The Catamounts return to action on Saturday, October 24 when they host Siena starting at 2 p.m.
