Lewis Sweeps IIT
ROMEOVILLE, Ill. , November 7th, 2009
Junior Kevin Coates (Louisville, Ky./Ballard) (15:51.46) and freshman Brandon Drogemuller (Hollister, Calif./San Benito) (15:53.08) finished the 1650 freestyle first and second with NCAA A times in Lewis’ meet with Illinois Institute of Technology on Saturday afternoon. The Lewis men topped IIT 110-90 while the Lewis women won 128-56.
Coates’ swim in the 1650 set a new pool record. Coates also won the 400 IM (4:16.50) with Drogemuller (4:28.77) taking second.
Two other Flyers recorded B times, just missing A cuts. Freshman Matt Schmidt (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) won the 200 butterfly in 1:53.20 setting a pool record. Junior Allie Henges’s (Cincinnati, Ohio/Purcell Marion) 2:09.69 won the 200 butterfly and just missed besting her own pool record by less than half a second.
Henges also won the 200 freestyle (1:59.07). Junior Stephanie Halcomb (Springfield, Mo./Ozark) won the 50 freestyle in 25.57. Junior Ruth Bass (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) earned the 400 IM title, touching the wall in 4:51.07. Freshman Angela Cusack (Willow Springs, Ill./Lyons Township) won the 100 freestyle in 54.52.
“As far as the women, wow,” head coach Steve Thompson said. “They might be more talented than I gave them credit for in our season preview. They will continue to grow through conference and NCAA Championships. Allie had a great day but we have swimmers pushing her heels. We swim at the University of Chicago in two weeks and we’ll know a lot more at that point.”
Senior Jason Ament (Mokena, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) won a pair of races, taking home the 200 and 500 freestyle titles in 1:44.76 and 4:44.98 respectively.
“Two A cuts and a B cut for Matt for the men,” Thompson said. “We’re getting closer but the guys have some areas where we need to improve. We have great expectations and this is a great start, but I’m looking for more of a complete team effort.”
For IIT, Max Ramminger set a pool record in the 100 freestyle (47.05).
Lewis returns to the pool on Nov. 20-22 in the Phoenix Fall Classic, hosted by the University of Chicago.
