Denver Crosses Pacific

STOCKTON, Calif. , November 7th, 2009           
The University of Denver swimming and diving teams swept the University of the Pacific on Saturday afternoon in the Chris Kjeldsen Pool in Stockton, Calif. The Pioneer women won 150-103, while the men defeated the Tigers 159-98.  Both teams are now 3-1 in dual meets.
 
The Pioneer women grabbed nine first-place finishes, five second-place finishes and nine third-place finishes, while the men finished with 10 first-place finishes, nine second-place finishes and seven third-place finishes.
 
Opening up the meet, the Pioneer women’s team of Bailey Beins (Wichita, Kan.), Grace Kittle (Dallas, Texas), Melissa Greeves (Melbourne, Australia) and Kristin Schmid (Aurora, Colo.) won the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:48.10, while the team of Michelle Needham (Portland, Ore.), Shannon Sullivan (Wichita, Kan.), Jackie Leung (Gresham, Ore.) and Racheal McGinnis (Hailey, Idaho) finish third with a time of 1:52.25.
 
Turning in an outstanding performance for the Pioneers, senior Olivia Dean (Aurora, Colo.) finished the day winning all three of her events. In the 200-yard Freestyle she touched home with a time of 1:55.92 and then followed it up with a time of 54.17 in the 100-yard Freestyle. She closed out the meet, winning the 100-yard Butterfly with a time of 57.64.
 
Also turning in a strong performance was Milberg as she secured two first-place finishes in the 100- and 200-yard Backstroke, with times of 57.96 and 2:02.55, respectively, while also grabbing a second-place finish in the 500-yard Freestyle (5:07.65).
 
Rounding out the first-place finishes for the Pioneer women were Amanda McNally (Lone Tree, Colo.), with a time of 17:24.55 in the 1650-yard Freestyle, Greeves, with a time of 2:04.60 in the 200-yard Butterfly and Schmid, with a time of 24.37 in the 50 Freestyle.
 
On the men’s side, the relay team of Gannon Totura (Castle Rock, Colo.), Garth Summers (Portland, Ore.), Jeff Cox (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Cole Worsley (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) won the 200-yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:36.61, while the Pioneer relay team of Caleb Severns (Fairbanks, Alaska), Ian Francis (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Scott Madaras (Yorktown, Va.) and Jeff Giddens (Carlsbad, Calif.) took second with a time of 1:37.93.
 
Continuing with the momentum, Totura grabbed wins in the 100- and 200-yard Backstroke with times of 53.50 and 1:56.20, respectively, while Summers secured wins in the 200-yard Butterfly with a time of 1:52.70 and the 100-yard Freestyle with a time of 47.19.
 
Also grabbing two first-place wins for the Pioneers was Robin Lindgren (Helsingborg, Sweden) as he won the 100-yard Breaststroke with a time of 1:00.20 and the 200-yard Breaststroke with a time of 2:10.23.
 
Rounding out the top performances for the men were Cox as he grabbed the win in the 200-yard Freestyle(1:44.42), Worsley with a win in the 50-yard Freestyle (22.32) and Robert Barrett (Scottsdale, Ariz.) with a tine in the 100-yard Butterfly (52.43).
 
After a month-long break, the Pioneers return to the pool as they take part in the University of Georgia Invite from Dec. 4-6 in Athens, Ga.




The visiting Pioneers of the University of Denver defeated the Pacific men’s swim team, 159-98. With the loss, the Tigers fall to 0-4 on the season while Denver improves to 4-0 on the year.

The Tigers took to the pool for a late morning meet against the University of Denver at Chris Kjeldsen Pool. To start the day, the men’s 200 Medley Relay teams touched the wall with times of 1:38.85 and 1:42.68 for a third and fourth place finish.

In the individual events, Aljaz Ojstersek (Ljubljana, Slovenia) finished first for Pacific in the 1650 Free (16:18.32) and 500 Free (4:42.23).

Freshmen Chris Weber (Valencia, Calif.) led the Tigers in the Breast events. In the 100 Breast, Weber finished second behind Robin Lindgren of Denver with a time of 1:00.54. Weber also swam the 200 Breast, touching the wall in 2:14.32 for the fourth place finish.

Sophomore Kevin Byers (Puyallup, Wash.) was Pacific’s top swimmer in the two Back events. Byers finished fourth in the 100 Back (54.70) followed by Dave Mathews (Dublin, Ireland) and Chris Berg (Chico, Calif.). In the 200 Back, Byers finished second behind Gannon Totura of Denver with a time of 1:59.42. Also swimming the 200 Back for Pacific were juniors Tyler Hannis (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Berg.

In the 100 Free, freshman Kevin Schirmer (Danville, Calif.) touched the all in 49.02 for the third place finish. Sophomore Jack Pope (Lahaina, Hawaii) touched the wall in 49.76, with freshman Clay Christy (San Diego, Calif.) and junior David Hernandez (Chico, Calif.) rounding out the top eight.
 
Byers, Sean Dunnigan (Bel Air, Md.), Garrett Murphy (Pleasanton, Calif.) and Bart Platow (Westport, Conn.) finished first through fourth in the 400 IM, touching the wall in 4:14.37, 4:22.11, 4:30.55 and 4:34.09 respectively.

Closing out the day the Tigers finished back-to-back in the 200 Free Relay to claim the top two spots.

Pacific travels to Fresno, Calif., for the Fresno Pacific/UC Santa Cruz tri-meet Nov. 21, at 12 p.m.

In the 200 Medley Relay, the relay team of seniors Melissa McGhee (Elk Grove, Calif.), Devonie Migues (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.), sophomore Elena Walterman (Framingham, Mass.), and freshman Mallory McGowan (Colusa, Calif.) finished in second, with a time of 1:50.10.

Sophomore Jayme Swalin (Kenmore, Wash.) finished in second-place in the 200 Free with a time of 1:56.67. In the 500 Free, Swalin touched the wall first at 5:03.93. Senior KC Albiston finished third in the event at 5:11.87.

Migues had a first-place and two second-place finishes for the Tigers. She took first in the 200 Breast, completing the race at 2:23.94. In the 100 Back, Migues posted a time of 58.20 to take second. Migues touched the wall for second place at 24.68 in the 50 Free, just three-tenths of a second after Kristin Schmid of Denver.

McGowan recorded a first-place finish in the 100 Breast, swimming her season-best time of 1:06.92.

Swimming a 2:06.45 in the 200 Fly, Walterman took second-place. She had another second-place finish in the 100 Fly, recording a time of 57.78.

McGhee swam the 200 Back in 2:07.63, to take second-place. In the 400 IM, McGhee posted a time of 4:32.55 to take first in the event.

The Tigers will be back in action on November 21 to take on Fresno Pacific and UC Santa Cruz at 12:00pm in Fresno, Calif.
