Navy Men, Boston Women Lead Mid-Major Ranks

Boston University’s women’s and the Naval Academy’s men’s swimming and diving programs sit atop the first CollegeSwimming.com/CSCAA Mid-Major Division I Poll. Navy is no stranger to the top spot, having captured the past two Mid-Major men’s titles. It is Boston’s first time in the number one spot. The Terrier women are off to a great start with a 6-0 record in duals this season. They edged Towson show led the ranking throughout most of the 2008-09 year. Towson finishes the pre-invite portion of the season with an 8-1 dual record falling just last weekend to Maryland ending their unbeaten streak.

Rounding out the women’s top five are Miami-Ohio (5-3), Western Kentucky (3-1-1) and Florida Gulf Coast University (7-3). The top ten is made up of schools representing seven conferences with the MAC, Sunbelt and CAA each having 2 teams included.

On the men’s side Navy starts their fall season 7-0 in dual meets. Missouri State claims the second spot with a 3-1 dual record in addition to a win over in-state rival Mizzou at the Show-me-Showdown.

Rounding out the top five are Western Kentucky, Eastern Michigan and UNC-Wilmington. Among the top ten men’s teams, six conferences are represented with the MAC and Sunbelt leading the way with 3 each placed in the top 10.

The Mid-Major poll is available to those institutions that a) are not members of a BCS conference, Mountain West Conference, or Western Athletic Conference; or b) provide fewer than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules. This Poll is inclusive of all results to date prior to mid season invitationals. The next poll will be released on December 23rd.
