Vermont Sweeps Maine, Keene State

Sophomore Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y.) earned a pair of victories to lead the University of Vermont swimming and diving team over both Maine and Keene State in a meet held at the University of Maine on Saturday afternoon. UVM topped Maine 150-130 and Keene State 170-111. The Catamounts bounced back after suffering their first losses of the season in their last time out to improve to 6-2 overall and 2-2 against America East opponents.

"I am very happy to see us come out and compete the way we did today," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer. "It is good to see us going back in the right direction."

Dowd paced the Cats by sweeping the 100 (1:09.23) and 200 (2:29.81) breaststroke events. Vermont dominated the freestyle events on the afternoon, winning the 50, 100, 200 and 1,000. UVM went 1-2-3 in the 100, as freshman Abby Mundt (Madison, Wis.) won the event in a time of 54.87 and was followed by teammates Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) and Hannah Center (Chevy Chase, Md.). Center took first in the 50 free (25.11) and was followed in second by Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.).

MacMillan led the Cats in the 200 free by finishing in first in 1:56.25, while sophomore Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) placed second. Heenan would go on to win the 500 free in 5:12.98 and freshman Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y.) took first in the 1,000 (10:32.55). Sophomore Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C.) also earned a victory in the 200 butterfly with a time of 2:11.02.

The Catamounts are now off until December 5, when they travel to face Yale starting at 12 p.m.
