Towson Goes 1-3 Against UMBC, Maryland

Junior Meredith Budner won a pair of individual events to lead the Towson University women's swimming and diving team to a split of their double dual meet against the University of Maryland and UMBC at the Eppley Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
Now 8-1 on the season, the Tigers defeated the Retrievers by a 214.50-85.50 margin. However, the Tigers had their streak of 13 straight dual meet victories snapped by the host Terrapins with a 184.50-115.50 setback.
 
Budner won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:50.28 before taking first place in the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:06.90. She also finished second in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.72 seconds.
 
Senior Kathryne Chalikis finished first in the 50-yard freestyle by completing the event in 24.18 seconds.
 
Junior Kayla Zeller led the Tigers to a win in the 1000-yard freestyle by finishing first with a time of 10:13.09 while junior Megen Donovan was third in the event by completing the event in 10:22.30. Zeller also turned in a third place effort in the 500-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 5:00.87.
 
Sophomore Cari Czarnecki led the Tigers’ effort in the 100-yard breaststroke by placing first with a time of 1:04.51 while senior Ivy Wimberley was third in the event with a time of 1:06.11. Czarnecki also finished in second place in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:21.84. 
 
Junior Brooke Golden placed second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.63 while sophomore Maggie Macedonia finished third in the 200-yard backstroke in 2:07.37. Golden also had a second-place effort in the 500-yard freestyle by completing the event in 4:59.87 and finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 58.00 seconds.
 
Sophomore Caroline Baker led the Tigers in the diving events on Saturday, finishing third in both events. She scored 221.90 points in the three-meter event and tallied 233.75 points in the one-meter event.
 
The Tigers also placed second in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:31.00.
 
The Tigers will return to the Eppley Recreation Center next week for the Maryland Invitational, which begins on Wednesday.




Senior Devin Kirby earned a victory in the 50-yard freestyle, but it wasn’t enough as the Towson University men's swimming and diving team dropped a pair of non-conference verdicts against Maryland and UMBC at a double dual meet at the Eppley Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Tigers dropped a 225-69 decision against the Retrievers while suffering a 223-73 setback against the host Terrapins.
 
Kirby finished first with a time of 21.03 seconds in the 50-yard freestyle. He also placed third in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 46.75 seconds.
 
Senior T.J. Farley placed fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.72.
 
Senior Zachary Wolfe finished second in both diving events for the Tigers, scoring 244.20 points in the one-meter event and 251.00 points in the three-meter event. Meanwhile, senior Bradley Bolin followed in third place in the three-meter diving event with 239.15 points and fourth place in the one-meter event with a score of 217.60 points.
 
The Tigers will return to the Eppley Recreation Center next week for the Maryland Invitational, which begins on Wednesday.



Senior Matt Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) placed first in three individual events and one relay as the UMBC men’s swimming and diving team defeated Maryland and Towson by a score of 152-148 and 223-73, respectively, Saturday in College Park, Md. The women’s team was defeated by the Terps and the Tigers by a score of 217-83 and 214.5-85.5, respectively.

Mattingly set UMBC season-best times in the 100 breast (57.73), 200 breast (2:07.95) and 200 IM (1:52.71). The 200 IM time was over four a half seconds faster than his previous best time this year.

Senior Zach Vonder Haar (Gahanna, Ohio/Columbus Academy), Mattingly, junior Brad Reitz (Ellicott City, Md./Howard) and sophomore Jason Mattingly (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) claimed first in a time of 1:34.18, while in the final event of the meet, freshman Herol Marjak (Harjumaa, Estonia/Tallinn Sec Science School), sophomore Mark Garbowski (Cherry Hill, NJ./Cherry Hill West), freshman Sandy Haibel (Rockville, Md/Richard Montgomery) and junior Keilan Freeman (Calgary, Alberta, Canada/Argyll Centre) touched first in the 400 free relay in a time of 3:05.26.

Junior Eric Jones (Gambrills, Md./Arundel) took first in two events, the 200 free (1:42.18) and the 100 free (46.41), while earning second in the 50 free in a time of 21.17. All three were UMBC season-best times.

Other Retrievers swimming team season-best times were Reitz, who finished second in the 200 fly in 1:53.20 and the 100 fly in 50.68, and sophomore Nour Saad (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills), who touched second in the 200 back in a time of 1:51.83.

On the women’s side, senior Tereza Kaplanova (Prague, Czech Republic/Gymnazium J.G. Jankovskeho) set UMBC season-best marks in the 200 breast (2:23.11) and the 200 IM (2:09.14), both of which she placed third.

Other team season-best times were set by senior Sam Maccherola (Woolford, Md./South Carroll/Tennessee), who finished second in the 200 free in 1:51.41, and junior Rebecca Godwin (Catonsville, Md./Notre Dame Prep), who touched second in the 1,000 free in 10:19.46.

The Retrievers return to action next weekend as they take part in the George Mason Patriot Invitational that takes place Friday through Sunday.
