Weekend Preview: Calm Before the Storm
With the fall dual meet season all but in the bag for 2009, most teams are finishing up their two to three months of hard training with their eyes on the always-anticipated fall invite. A handful of regional match-ups dot the sparse dual meet schedule this weekend.
Minnesota Grand Prix: The Golden Gophers kick off the invitational season by hosting a wealth of high-end talent (Burnett, Klueh, Soni, Sutton, Ziegler) in addition to their collegiate visitors this Friday through Sunday.
Alabama at Auburn: The Tigers rolled past the Tide in the Iron Bowl in the Pool Thursday night to keep their dual meet records unblemished.
Notre Dame at Pitt: Another football/swimming double-dip; this time in the Big East. Notre Dame’s men won a 152-148 Halloween weekend ‘Thriller’ thanks to a win in the final relay over the Panthers last season. Notre Dame has won five straight against Pitt but is looking to regain the luck of the Irish after a loss to rival Purdue last weekend.
Texas A&M at Harvard: The Aggie men travel far from home in the first of two duals in the Boston area this weekend (Boston U. being the other). Which team will get the education in Cambridge Friday is yet to be determined.
“Border Battle” – Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Mankato State and South Dakota at Wisconsin-Stevens Point: All four head coaches are Stevens Point alums in this far north regional rumble.
Wyoming, NMSU at New Mexico: The Cowboys and Cowgirls look to keep their record perfect in the Land of Enchantment.
UMBC, Towson at Maryland: The Terrapins look to get back on the winning track after getting swept by UNC last weekend.
Vermont at Maine: The Catamounts are 4-2 on the year, but will be looking to improve on a 1-2 league mark in their match-up against the Black Bears.
Fresno Pacific at UC-Davis: The Davis men aim to improve to 4-0 on the season against the NAIA runners-up.
