UMass Dominates Binghamton In Sweep

Both UMass swimming&diving teams moved to 3-1 in dual meets this season with dominating performances on Saturday in a sweep of Binghamton at the Joseph Rogers Pool. The men's team won, 171-107, while the women cruised to victory as well, 182-117.

Bob Newcomb's women's team used a balanced attack, led especially strong performances in the breaststroke events, while Russ Yarworth's men's team was once again led by the trio of Juan Moliere and Joey Sbordon in the pool and Jason Cook on the diving board.

Moliere swept the sprints for the Minutemen, winning the 50 free (20.75) and the 100 free (46.91). The senior from San Juan, Puerto Rico also anchored two UMass relay teams that posted top times, the 200 medley relay (1:35.05) with a free leg of 20.46 and the 200 free relay (1:24.03) with a blistering 19.97 closing 50.

While Moliere dominated the sprints, Sbordon cleaned up in the other freestyle events, winning the 200 free (1:42.67), 500 free (4:48.08), and 1000 free (9:53.81).

In diving, Cook remained undefeated on the season. In the one meter, he posted a top score of 321.82, going one-two with teammate Adam Duffield (261.89). The same pair took the top two spots in the three meter as well with scores of 337.05 and 298.73.

Brian Schmidt led a UMass sweep of the top three spots in the 100 breast (1:00.55), with Beau Garufi (1:01.80) taking second and Pete Sacco (1:01.97) third. The same top two swapped spots in the 200 breast, with Garufi finishing first (2:16.50) and Schmidt second (2:17.71).
 

 
    

Mike Berthaume also claimed a pair of individual victories in the 100 fly (51.29) and 200 fly (1:59.21).

The men's team staked the early lead in the meet with the top two teams in the 200 medley relay. Max Butler, Schmidt, Chris Howard, and Moliere took first place with a time of 1:35.05 and the team of Berthaume, Sacco, Sasan Tehrani, and Trevor Ziegler took second place in 1:36.87.

On the women's side, the breaststroke events continued to be the team's strength. In the 100, Jessica Starosielec won in a time of 1:08.00, while Rachel Borden (1:08.13) finished second and Meghan Nowak (1:09.64) fourth. In the 200, Starosielec and Borden finished in a dead heat of 2:27.62 for the win. Nowak claimed third with a time of 2:30.24.

Hannah Swift swept the diving events, winning the one meter with a score of 228.15 and the three meter with 218.92. Coach Mandy Hixon's divers took the top three spots in the one meter event with Michaela Butler (202.80) finishing second and Megan Whiteford (184.20) third.

Julie Magyar (10:49.89) and Chelsea Downing (10:50.35) finished one-two in the 1000 free, while Downing took first in the 500 free (5:13.49), going one-two with Molly Papish (5:18.39).

Freshman Amina Meho won the 100 back in 1:00.87 and finished second in the 50 free (24.73).

Other individual winners for the women were Kayla Tegeler in the 200 fly (2:10.84), Sarah Kanellas in the 100 fly (59.61), and Tavis Potter in the 200 IM (2:12.54).

The swimming and diving teams are off next weekend as they prepare for the Terrier Invitational at Boston University on Nov. 20-22.
