Randolph College Dumps Swimming for Lacrosse

Lynchburg, VA , May 21st, 2009

Randolph College will eliminate its women’s swimming program.  The private Lynchburg, Virginia college marks the third women’s only program to be cut this spring, joining Pepperdine University and Agnes Scott College.

The Wildcats suffered from low participation and coaching turnover that contributed to a relatively small roster.  Head coach Christen Colburn, who stepped down in March, led the Wildcats The team finished a respectable fifth in this year’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships.  That wasn’t enough however.

In its place, Randolph will look to increase enrollment and be competitive in lacrosse.  The college is making a significant investment in the sport.  They’ve recently completed a new artificial turf field and will go up against several nationally-ranked and well-funded ODAC programs.
