CSCAA to Honor Coach Richard Quick at Annual Convention
March 24th, 2009
The College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) will bestow its Lifetime Achievement Award on Richard Quick, head men's and women's coach at Auburn University, at its annual convention, May 21-24 in Chicago.. Quick, 66, who has inoperable brain cancer, is the first recipient of the award.
This is an event every member of the US coaching community should attend,” said Phil Whitten, Executive Director of the CSCAA. Many of America's most renowned coaches, including Mark Schubeert, Peter Daland, David Marsh and Eddie Reese, to name just a few, have already indicated they will attend the convention
“It is fitting that Coach Quick be the first recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award, “ commented CSCAA President George Kennedy. “His credentials are unassailable.” Indeed, CSCAA awards are nothing new for Quick, who has been honored as the CSCAA's “NCAA Coach of the Year” five times. And was A teen-time “Pac-10 Coach of the Year.”.
If anything, Kennedy's high praise is an understatement. In a career that has spanned 33 years, with stops at SMU, Iowa State, Auburn, Texas, Stanford and, again, at Auburn, Quick compiled a record that is challenged only by the legendary Doc Councilman and Peter Daland.
Incliuding five at Texas and seven at Stanford, including five consecuutive from 1992-96. In 17 years at Stanford, he led the Cardinal to 14 Pac-10 chamapionships, including 11 straight ffrom 1989-99.
He guided 12 teams to NCAA team titles, the most ever in NCAA Division I swimming history. At Texas,, he led the Longhorns to five consecutive NCAA titles, while at Stanford his teams won seven national collegiate championships Some forty Quick-coached swimmers have earned individual NCAA crowns.
Internationally, he has been just as successful, serving six times as a US Olympic coach, including stints in 1998, 1996 and 2000.as head coach. Among the swimmers he has coached are Jenny Thompson, Misty Hyman, Dara Torres, Summer Sanders, Rowdy Gaines and Steve Lundquist, to name just a handful..
