Matt Davidson Named Harvard Women's Assistant Coach
CAMBRIDGE, MA , June 29th, 2009
Former volunteer assistant Matt Davidson has been
named assistant coach of the Harvard women’s swimming and diving team,
Stephanie Wriede Morawski, the Costin Family Head Coach for Women's
Swimming and Diving, announced Monday.
Davidson has volunteered with the Crimson for the past two seasons and
has simultaneously achieved success at the youth and masters levels. He
is an American Swim Coaches Association Level 3 certified age-group
coach and was one of just 11 coaches from around the nation selected to
participate in the 2008 ASCA Fellows Program.
“As a volunteer, Matt's enthusiasm for the sport was contagious, and he
has a talent for motivating everyone on the team,” Morawski said. “I am
thrilled that he accepted the assistant position and am looking forward
to seeing him continue to use his coaching strengths here at Harvard,
now in an official capacity.”
Davidson coached Harvard’s ECAC Championships squads in 2008 and 2009.
His 2009 group won the ECAC title, claiming championships in five
events and setting a new meet record in the 400-yard medley relay. He
also contributed throughout the season to a team effort that yielded an
Ivy League championship, 15 All-Ivy selections and 12 school records.
In five seasons as a youth coach, Davidson has coached 40 YMCA
All-Americans as well as numerous Nationals and Junior Nationals
qualifiers and one Olympic Trials qualifier. His swimmers have broken
more than 30 team records and earned top-10 times nationally in various
events and age groups.
A graduate of Salem State College, Davidson served as the head junior
group coach and assistant Nationals coach for the YMCA of the North
Shore from 2004 to 2008 and held the same position with the Bay &
Ocean State Squids last season.
Davidson was also the head coach of the Cambridge Masters Swim Club for
2008-09, leading the team to the 2009 New England Championship. His
swimmers set four national records and 20 New England records. One of
his athletes was recognized by Swimming World Magazine as one of the
world’s top 12 masters swimmers.
