Shorewomen Soak Bears, 127-75
Sophomore Rachel Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) won three individual events to lead host Washington College to a 127-75 Centennial Conference women's swimming victory over visiting Ursinus this afternoon at Casey Swim Center. The Shorewomen improved to 9-3 overall and 2-3 in conference meets with the win.
Glasser captured the 1000 freestyle in a Washington College season-best time of 10:50.31, the 200 freestyle in 2:01.48, and the 500 freestyle in 5:23.76. Junior Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) and freshman Kelly Dunbar (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) each won two individual events. Gerhart took the 50 freestyle in 25.16 and the 100 freestyle in 55.74. Dunbar swam a 4:55.89 in the 400 individual medley to win the race and become the Shorewomen's 10th-fastest swimmer ever in that event. She also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:35.34. Junior Cailin Eisele (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) finish first in the 100 butterfly in 1:02.37.
Senior Kimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga), Dunbar, Eisele, and Gerhart led off the meet by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:56.32. Gerhart swam the anchor leg of the relay and turned a 1.11-second deficit at the start of her leg into a victory by 36 hundredths of a second. Eisele, freshman Laura Risell (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), freshman Morgan Phillips (Charlottesville, VA/Albermarle), and freshman Ellen Liebenow (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) swam as an exhibition entry in the 200 freestyle relay and turned in the event's fastest time of 1:47.83.
Freshman Mary Stroman (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Friends Central) added second-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:05.07) and the 100 freestyle (57.76), while Shoemaker was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:05.39.
The Shorewomen return to action one week from today with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference home meet against McDaniel.
Shoremen Leave Bears All Wet, 119-84
Washington College got a season-best time in six different events as the Shoremen downed visiting Ursinus, 119-84, on Saturday afternoon in a Centennial Conference men's swim meet this afternoon at the Casey Swim Center. The Shoremen, who won seven of the 11 events on the day, improve to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the conference with the win. The Bears drop to 4-7 overall and 1-5 in the conference.
Washington got its first season-best time in the 200 medley relay when the team of sophomore Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook), freshman Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley), junior Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) and junior Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) tallied a time of 1:41.86 to win the event. WC also got three other first place finishes that netted season-best times with Soper in the 50 freestyle (22.56), Violette in the 400 individual medley (4:27.98) and Pollock in the 100 butterfly (54.73). The Shoremen had two season-best times in second place finishes, senior Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson) in the 1000 freestyle (10:33.49) and freshman Nick Longworth (Media, PA/Strath Haven) in the 200 freestyle (1:51.82). In addition to recording WC's best time of the year in the 200 freestyle, Longworth became the eighth fastest swimmer in the school's history in the 100 backstroke with a time of 56.63 to grab first place in the event.
Other first place finishes for Washington was Soper in the 100 freestyle (50.48) and the relay team of Longworth, Pollock, senior Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) and Wentzel in the 200 freestyle relay (1:35.17).
Auger placed second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.15.
The Shoremen return to action one week from today with a 1:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet on Senior Day against visitng McDaniel.
