Eight different Mustang swimmers won two races apiece as the Cal Poly men’s and women’s swimming teams cruised to dual victories over UC Santa Cruz at Sinsheimer Park. Freshmen Lacey Buck, Amy Morales and Kylie France and sophomore Karin Schleicher each won two races to lead the women to a 183-104 win while freshmen Tom Chard and Zack Strumbell and sophomores Peter Kline and Matthew Waggoner each scored a pair of victories for the men in a 170-118 triumph. The Cal Poly women won all 14 races while the men won 12 of 14 contests.
Morales began her day with a win in the 100 Back and continued by posting a winning time of 24.93 in the 50 Free. Schleicher cruised to a 1:06.83 victory in the 100 Breast and later added a win in the 100 Free.
After breaking two school distance records in Long Beach last week, Buck competed in shorter races on Saturday and emerged victorious in the 200 Fly and 500 Free. A fourth double winner for the Mustang women was France, who touched first in the 200 Breast and won by over three and a half seconds in the 200 IM.
Not to be outdone, the Cal Poly men won the first seven races of the day and only came in second in the 50 and 100 Free. Waggoner won the first individual race of the day with a time of 9:39.08 in the 1000 Free and later triumphed in the 500 Free. A freshman from Eveleth, Minn., Strumbell gained a victory in the 200 Free and also won the 100 Fly.
The Mustang’s breast specialist, Chard gained easy victories in both the 100 and 200 Breast races. Kline didn’t swim the 200 Back after breaking the school record last week, but the sophomore won both the 200 Fly and 200 IM on Saturday.
The event did include both one and three meter diving, though only the Banana Slugs participated, as Cal Poly has not been diving this season.
Cal Poly will close its regular season by hosting a Big West dual with Pacific next Friday, February 6, at 2 p.m. at the Cal Poly Rec Center.
