Ouellette, Laden & Connolly Lead Bentley to Triangular Sweep
Egen Ouellette (West Hartford, Conn./Conard HS), Sam Laden (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire HS) and Willie Connolly (Washington, Conn./Shepaug Valley HS) each were triple-winners as Bentley University defeated both Wheaton College and Bridgewater State in a triangular men’s swimming meet Tuesday night at the Dana Center pool.
Capturing 12 of 16 events, Bentley swam past Bridgewater, 231-58, and Wheaton, 202-93, to improve to 6-4 on the season.
All of Ouellette’s wins came in freestyle events with the sophomore posting times of 1:49.93 in the 100, 50.02 seconds in the 50 and 5:01.59 in the 500. Laden, a junior, captured the 50 breaststroke (28.59), the 50 free (23.02) and the 200 breast (2:19.04). Connolly, also a junior, was victorious in the 50 backstroke (25.09), 200 back (1:59.76) and the 200 individual medley (2:04.57.
All three also participated in winning relays. Connolly and Laden were part of the 400 medley relay (3:45.56) and Ouellette led off the Falcons’ 400 free relay (3:25.40). Sophomore Chris Horan (Hanover/Boston College HS) was the only Bentley swimmer to participate on both of those winning relay teams.
Bentley’s other individual winner was freshman Eric Stricker (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central HS), with a time of 10:33.31 in the 1,000 free.
The next meet for the Falcons is Saturday afternoon in Albany, N.Y. against Saint Rose.
Kaduboski Extends Streak as Bentley Splits with Bridgewater & Wheaton
With sophomore Anne Kaduboski (Dedham/Dedham HS) winning three events, the Bentley University women’s swimming and diving team defeated Bridgewater State, 217-78, but fell to Wheaton College, 172-127, during a meet Tuesday night at the Dana Center pool.
Kaduboski posted victories in the 200 yard freestyle (2:00.07), the 200 backstroke (2:14.07) and the 200 individual medley (2:15.99). She is now unbeaten in her last 44 races in dual competition.
Senior Kristen Thuerk (Cheshire, Conn./Cheshire HS), competing in her final meet in her home pool, was a double-winner, touching first in both the 200 butterfly (2:19.86) and the 1000 freestyle (11:18.06).
Bentley’s other victory in the meet was recorded by sophomore Emily Travers (Brentwood, N.H./Exeter HS), with a score of 223.05 points in the one-meter diving. She was just edged out on the three-meter board, with her score of 223.90 just 35 hundredths back of winner Julia Wright of Wheaton.
Bentley, 8-5, will wrap up its dual schedule Saturday afternoon at Saint Rose.
Farrell leads women to sweep at Bentley, men split double-dual
Wheaton College sophomore Samantha Farrell (Reading, MA/Reading Memorial) notched four victories to lead the women’s swimming & diving team to a sweep of host Bentley College and visiting Bridgewater State College on Tuesday night at the Dana Center, while the men split with the Bears and Falcons.
Extending its winning streak to four, the Lyon women downed Bentley, 172-127 and Bridgewater State, 222-75 to improve to 8-5-1 overall. The men defeated Bridgewater State, 212-67 but fell to the hosts, 202-93, moving to 4-10 on the year.
Farrell’s four triumphs included a pair of individual victories and two relay wins. She topped the competition in the 50-yard butterfly and freestyle events, including edging out a teammate by 0.03 seconds in the fly race, while leading off during the victorious 400-yard freestyle relay and anchoring the fastest 400-yard medley relay.
Joining Farrell in the 400 free were senior Caitlin Glover (Durham, NH/Berwick Academy) and sophomores Sara Hollar (La Crescenta, CA/Flintridge Prep) and Nicole Zais (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury Regional). Farrell and Zais sided with junior Iris Meehan (Bar Harbor, ME/Mount Desert Island) and sophomore Dania Piscetta (Belmont, NH/Belmont) during the 400 medley.
Meehan, Piscetta and Zais aided Wheaton’s 10 event wins by finishing in front of the pack in the 50-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle and 50-yard breaststroke, respectively. A trio of freshmen also contributed to the Lyon sweep, with Taryn Brosnan (Westford, MA/Academy of Notre Dame) taking first in the 200 breast, Sarah Miller (Madison, NJ/Madison) earning top honors in the 500 free and Julia Wright (Pomfret, VT/Northfield Mount Hermon School) clipping the runner up in the three-meter dive by 0.35 points.
For the men, sophomore Corey Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) won the 200 fly, while classmate Zach Fichman-Klein (North Attleboro, MA/North Attleboro) bested the competition in the 50 fly. Each also swam a leg on second-place relay squads.
Best, sophomores Sam Dean-Lee (Rocky Hill, CT/Xavier) and Eddie Gillie (Haverhill, MA/Saint John’s Prep) and freshman Devon Best (Brentwood, TN/Ravenwood) played a hand in the 400 medley relay, while Fichman-Klein joined Dean-Lee and first-year athletes Cole Larson-Whittaker (Penobscot, ME/George Stevens Academy) and Andrew Oliveri (Glastonbury, CT/Glastonbury) in the 400 free relay.
Rounding out the runner-up marks were Devon Best in the 200 back, Gillie in the 500 free, Dean-Lee during the 100 and 200 free events, Larson-Whittaker in the 1,000 free, sophomore Ben Sabol (Saint Petersburg, FL/Shorecrest Prep) during the 50 back and free, and freshman Charles Western (Syracuse, NY/Nottingham) in the 200 fly.
The Lyons compete in their final dual meets of the season on Saturday at Bates College with Tufts University. Action is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
