Denison tops Grove City

The Grove City College men's swimming and diving team fell to 8-2 overall Saturday afternoon with a 162-120 setback against visiting Denison University in a non-conference dual meet at the Grove City College Pool.

Senior Caleb Courage (Shippensburg, Pa./Shippensburg) earned a pair of victories for Grove City. He won the 100 free in 45.68 seconds, then won the 100 butterfly in 51.39 seconds. Courage provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in the 100 free. He also surpassed a "B" standard in the 200 free with a time of 1:42.70, which earned him second place Saturday.

Senior Tim Whitbeck (Saegertown, Pa./Saegertown) won the 50 free in 20.97 seconds. That time provisionally qualifies Whitbeck for the NCAA meet.

Whitbeck, Coruage, senior Peter Larsen (Federal Way, Wash./Tacoma Baptist) and freshman Kirk Gagliardo (Wadsworth, Ill./Warren Township) closed the meet by taking second in the 400 free relay with a "B" qualifying time of 3:05.45.

The women's swimming and diving team fell to 8-3 overall Saturday afternoon with a 161-124. Freshman Bethany Johnson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Calvary Christian) swept the diving events for Grove City. She won the 1-meter competition with 213.60 points, then took 3-meter diving with 191.75 points. It is her third sweep of the season.

Sophomore Sarah Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Pine Creek) led Grove City's effort in the pool by taking second in the 50 free with a time of 25.19 seconds.

Grove City will conclude Presidents' Athletic Conference action Tuesday night against Westminster at 6 p.m.
