Shoremen Douse Gophers, 111-70
Freshman Nick Longworth (Media, PA/Strath Haven), junior Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield), and junior Dan Beadell (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield) each won two individual events as visiting Washington College improved to 3-3 this season with a 111-70 win over host Goucher in non-conference men's swimming Tuesday in Towson, Md.
Longworth won the 200 freestyle (1:53.54) and 100 backstroke (57.59), Soper took the 50 freestyle (23.27) and 100 freestyle (52.17), and Beadell won the 1000 freestyle (11:24.32) and 500 freestyle (5:29.82). Senior Mike Caro (Yorktown, VA/Yorktown) added a first-place finish in the 200 individual medley (2:19.36) and junior Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) won the 100 butterfly (56.11).
Freshman Johnny Helenek (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) swam the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.35) as an exhibition entrant and was also second in the 200 individual medley (2:21.28). Freshman Ben Longwell (East Greenville, PA/Upper Perkiomen) was second in the 1000 freestyle (12:13.38), while sophomore Tim Beadell (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield) was second in the 100 freestyle (55.17).
Longworth, Helenek, Pollock, and Tim Beadell won the 200 medley relay (1:46.52), while Dan Beadell, Pollock, freshman Ross Mills (Silver Spring, MD/Paint Branch), and Soper swam the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:37.40) as an exhibition.
The Shoremen return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference home meet against Elizabethtown.
Shorewomen Flood Gophers, 119-73
Sophomore Rachel Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) won three individual events as the Washington College women's swim team ran its non-conference win streak to 52 meets with a 119-73 win over host Goucher tonight in Towson, MD.
Glasser won the 1000 freestyle (11:05.42), 100 butterfly (1:01.73), and 500 freestyle (5:35.51). Junior Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area) captured the 200 freestyle (2:03.16) and 100 freestyle (57.24), while freshman Jenna Moore (Catonsville, MD/Mount de Sales) finished first in the 50 freestyle (25.71) and swam the fastest time in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.92) as an exhibition entrant. Freshman Kelly Dunbar (Williamsburg, VA/Lafayette) added a first-place finish in the 400 individual medley in 4:57.10.
Junior Cailin Eisele (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Egg Harbor Township) was second in both the 50 freestyle (27.20) and 100 butterfly (1:04.03). Senior Kimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) took second in the 100 backstroke (1:05.94), freshman Mary Stroman (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Friends Central) was second in the 400 individual medley (5:11.06), and freshman Morgan Phillips (Charlottesville, VA/Albermarle) placed second in the 500 freestyle (5:46.17).
Shoemaker, Moore, Gerhart, and Stroman won the 200 medley relay in 1:56.18. Eisele, Phillips, freshman Laura Risell (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley), and freshmanEllen Liebenow (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) swam the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:49.12) as an exhibition.
The Shorewomen (7-2) return to action Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference home meet against Elizabethtown.
Shoremen Achieve 111-70 Victory Over Gophers
Goucher produced the runner-up in five individual events before Michael Ambrosio (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke in a 111-70 loss to Washington (Md.) this evening.
Ambrosio was competing against only another Goucher swimmer as he earned nine points for the Gophers (2-6) with his effort in the 100 breast. He completed the event in 1:12.95.
The five second-place performances by Goucher swimmers in contested events with the Shoremen (3-3) were achieved by three individuals: Charlie Rooney (Sea Bright, N.J./Christian Brothers Academy) was runner-up in the 200 free (2:00.31) and 500 free (5:48.82), Kyle Williams (Andover, N.J./Newton) placed second in the 50 free (:23.92) and 100 back (:58.16), and Sasha Verin (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron) turned in a time of :59.80 in the 100 butterfly, good for second place.
The Gophers were also awarded first place and 11 points in the 200 freestyle relay where the winning time was 1:42.81. Swimming for Goucher were Ambrosio, Steve Baum (Fallston, Md./Fallston), James Genco (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) and Verin.
Gophers Bow to Shoremen, Drop Back to .500
It wasn't until the eighth event that Bethany Natoli (Alexandria, Va./O'Connell) broke through and provided Goucher with its initial first-place performance of this evening's meet against Washington (Md.). By that time, the Shoremen (7-2) were well on their way to a 119-73 triumph over head coach Tom Till's Gophers.
Natoli's victory was in the 100-yard breaststroke and her winning time of 1:05.77 allowed her to beat out Kimber Shoemaker of the Shoremen by 17-hundredths of a second.
Once the Shoremen backed off and started swimming exhibitions, the Gophers (5-5) picked up first place in one more individual event and also a relay: Sam Sutherland (North Reading, Mass./Austin Prep) collected nine points for Goucher with her effort in the 100 breast (1:16.85) and the quartet of Victoria Adinolfi (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie), Rachel Leavitt-Baron (Seattle, Wash./Seattle Academy), Natoli and Sandy Okun (Stevenson, Md./McDonogh School) was awarded first place (1:55.24) and 11 points in the 200 free relay.
The Gophers, who suffered their third loss in a row, produced the runner-up in three contested individual events: Judith Stern (Reisterstown, Md./Grier School) in the 1000 free (13:25.44), Britt Hogstrom (Killington, Vt./Woodstock Union) in the 200 free (2:08.89) and Sutherland in the 100 free (:58.83).
