McDaniel Opens Second Half With Split Against Elizabethtown

WESTMINSTER, Md. , January 13th, 2009           

Stephen Gomez (Charlottesville, Va./Albermmarle) won three times to lead McDaniel to a 61-33 victory over Elizabethtown in non-conference men’s swimming action on Tuesday.

The Green Terror (1-3) won eight of the 11 events to defeat the Blue Jays (2-8).

The Elizabethtown women (6-4) defeated McDaniel (0-4), 56-39.

Gomez touched first in the 1000 freestyle (10:33.31) and 200 backstroke (2:07.88) to earn a pair of individual victories before swimming the third leg of the 400 free relay, which won with a time of 3:34.22.

James Eu (Reston, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) added a three-win performance, teaming with Gomez in the 400 free relay after individual victories in the 100 (51.10) 200 (1:51.53) freestyle events.

Morgan DeHart (Salisbury, Md./Wicomico), also part of the winning relay, touched first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:09.88.

Lindsay Riley and Gretchen Geiger notched triple-win performances for the Blue Jays, who won eight events including the final seven of the meet.

Jessica Fry (St. Mary’s, Ga./Camden County) won the 1000 free for McDaniel with a time of 11:18.88. Katie Dorian (Newtown Square, Pa./Notre Dame Academy) and Rachel Walega (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) added victories in the 200 (2:06.03) and 50 (26.84), respectively.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Dickinson on Saturday. Meet time is 1 p.m.

Swim Teams Compete at McDaniel
The Elizabethtown College men's and women's swimming teams traveled to McDaniel College for a non-conference meet on Tuesday night, with the women winning 56-39 and the men falling 61-32.

The Blue Jay women (6-4 overall) won the final five events to pick up the victory, and were led by senior Gretchen Geiger (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown) who won the 200 individual medley (2:23.53) and the 200 breaststroke (2:30.76).

Other wins came from junior Lindsay Riley (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) in the 100 freestyle (56.52), sophomore Courtney Kelly (Guilford, CT/Guilford) in the 200 backstroke (2:20.52), and first year student Emily Robinson (Columbia, PA/Lancaster Catholic) in the 500 freestyle (5:36.70).

The Blue Jays swept both relays, as the team of Riley, Geiger, senior Jenny Brizek (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) and sophomore Stephanie Hellman (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Catholic) took the 400 medley relay (4:20.96) and the quartet of Brizek, junior Kara Geiger (Zionsville, PA/Emmaus), Hellman and Riley won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:54.24.
 
The men (2-8 overall) saw junior Matt Drob (Strasburg, PA/Lampeter-Strasburg) win the 50 freestyle (22.92) and senior Chris Miller (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) take the victory in the 500 freestyle (5:08.27).

Miller and Drob were joined by junior Dan Provence (Brookhaven, PA/Penncrest) and sophomore Tom Hagerty (Enola, PA/East Pennsboro) in the 400 medley relay which won with a time of 4:02.34.
