Towson and Delaware Split CAA Contest

Towson Swims Pasts Delaware 158-142
Competing in the final home meet of her college career, senior Danielle Kelly won an individual event and helped the Tigers win a relay as the defending Colonial Athletic Association champions outlasted the University of Delaware by a 158-142 margin at Burdick Pool on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers, who were competing for the first time since late November, improved their dual meet record to 9-1 on the season. They also upped their home dual meet win streak to 11 straight dual meets.

One of seven seniors competing at home for the last time in their career, Kelly won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 59.24 seconds after helping the Tigers win the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:48.24.

Junior Robin Glaser, who teamed up with Kelly in the 200-yard medley relay, took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 53.42 seconds. She also swam the third leg of the Tigers' victorious 400-yard freestyle relay, which finished with a time of 3:31.76.

Freshman Cari Czarnecki took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:05.61 while sophomore Brooke Golden won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:05.39.

Freshman Veronica Feltrin earned first place in the 50-yard freestyle in 24.56 seconds before sophomore Meredith Budner took first place in the 200-yard individual medley, turning in a mark of 2:08.56.

Freshman Cortney Barry led the Blue Hens in the loss by winning three events. She recorded a time of 5:00.52 in the 500-yard freestyle in addition to winning the 1000-yard freestyle in 10:04.80. She also posted a victory in the 200-yard freestyle, touching the wall in 1:54.30.

The Tigers will begin a three-meet road trip next weekend when they travel to George Mason.

DELAWARE DEFEATS TIGERS IN HOME FINALE, 184-95
Despite first place finishes from seniors Eric Pinno and Ryan Godfrey, the Tigers dropped a 184-95 decision against the University of Delaware in a Colonial Athletic Association dual meet at Burdick Pool on Saturday afternoon.
 
Pinno earned first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 45.42 seconds while Godfrey took first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 1:58.10.
 
Meanwhile, freshman Wesley Foltz won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:58.57.

In addition to his victory in the 200-yard individual medley, Godfrey also posted a second place time in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:01.83.
 
Meanwhile, senior Gordon Amato earned a second place finish in the 200-yard individual medley in his final home meet, turning in a time of 2:00.23. He also finished third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 54.67 seconds.
 
The Tigers will begin a season-ending three-meet road trip next Saturday when they travel to George Mason.
 
Records Fall as Blue Hen Swimmers Split with Towson
Hans Gillan and Cortney Barry both broke University of Delaware swimming records as the Blue Hens split their Colonial Athletic Association meet with the Towson Tigers on Saturday afternoon at the Burdick Pool.

Gillan broke his own mark in the 100-butterfly with a time of 49.90 while leading the men (8-2, 4-1 CAA) to a 184-95 victory over Towson. Barry also shattered the all-time program mark in the 1,000-freestyle after finishing in 10:04.80. Despite her effort, the women (7-2, 3-2) fell in a closely-contested battle to the Tigers, 158-142.

Along with her record-setting performance, Barry won two other events during the meet. In the 200-freestyle, she paced the field with a time of 1:54.30 before returning to win the 500-yard event in 5:00.52.

Standout diver Shannon Burke also won multiple events, capturing both the 1- and 3-meter dives. In the former, she took the title with a score of 221.40, while she won the latter with a 246.37 mark.

Maryann Walker, Hannah Facchine and Sarah Begley rounded out a well-balanced effort on the women’s side as each won an event and finished second in another. Walker took the crown in the 200-backstroke with a time of 2:07.29, while she swam the lead leg on the 400-freestyle relay team that finished second in 3:33.89.

Facchine continued her strong freshman campaign by winning the 200-breaststroke in 2:22.33 before finishing as the runner-up in the 100-yard discipline with a time of 1:06.30. Begley also had a strong day in the pool, taking the 100-butterfly in 58.32 after swimming a leg on Delaware’s 200-medley relay team that finished second with a time of 1:49.63.

On the men’s side, Grady Carter won three events, including two individual competitions. In the 100-backstroke, he led all participants with a time of 52.59, while he also won the 50-freestyle in 21.34. Earlier in the meet, he also teamed with Gillan, John Ohlhaver, and Ross Buckwalter to take the 200-medley relay in 1:34.85.

Along with Carter, senior diver Matt Abbruzzese also won multiple individual titles as he captured both the 1- and 3-meter boards. In the 1-meter event, he finished with a score of 256.42, while he took the 3-meter dive in 289.27.

After serving on the victorious relay team, Ohlhaver and Buckwalter also returned to the pool to win solo titles. Ohlhaver won the 200-freestyle in 1:43.50, while Buckwalter took the 100-breaststroke in 1:00.80.

Four other Hens also won events as Matt Wehrman, Craig Young, Josh Hyman, and Dominic Pavlik all earned first-place finishes. Wehrman won the 1000-freestyle in 9:57.18, Young took the 200-backstroke in 1:54.02, and Hyman captured the 200-breaststroke in 2:10.55.

Pavlik rounded out the victors by leading an impressive performance in the 500-freestyle. In the event, he cruised to the win with a time of 4:48.42, just edging out teammates Chad Gordan and Wehrman, who finished second and third respectively.

Both Blue Hen teams will return to the pool next Saturday at 2 p.m. when Delaware squares off with the Drexel Dragons in Philadelphia.
