Mavericks roll to title in Florida

Tampa, FL , January 10th, 2009           

Mesa State College scored 816 points Saturday in the St. Leo Invitational in Tampa, Fla., to run away with the title.

Florida Southern scored 400 points to finish second in the four-team meet.

The invitational was also broken into duals, with the Mavericks winning all three of those by winning 10 of 14 individual events.

Katie Wedel won the 200 butterfly, 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and the Mavericks won the 200 medley relay and finished second in the 200 free relay. Sarah Hagerstrom won the 1,000 freestle, Megan Takakura the 200 free, Jaclyn McMillen the 100 backstroke and 200 backstroke and Laura Tully the 100 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke.

Mesa State’s depth led them to the title, placing at least three swimmers in the top 10 in every event.

Mesa State defeated Florida Southern 179-87, St. Leo 202-59 and Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) 202-41.
