At the end of day two, the Florida Gulf Coast women continue to lead in the championship with a score of 568 and Davidson is in second with 414 points. Georgia Southern is locked in third with 320 points at the conclusion of day two at the Gabrielsen Natatorium on the campus of the University of Georgia. For the men, College of Charleston continues to sit in first with 609 points, Davidson is second with 547 points and Gardner-Webb is third with 440 points.
Day one finals of the CCSA Championship started off with the men’s 200 medley relay. College of Charleston (Chris Rogers, Randy Buchanan, Greg Greer and Preston Parrish) grabbed the gold finishing in a time of 1:31.17, which is a new CCSA best time. Capturing second-place was Davidson (Scott Frantz Jr., Patrick Whitman, Miller Williams and Bryan Droll), who clocked in at 1:31.85 for the second-place CCSA spot. Gardner-Webb (Samuel Woods, Collin Burchins, Patrick Elerding and Matthew Leonard) secured the third-place title with a time of 1:32.26, notching third in the Conference. On the women’s side the Florida Gulf Coast team of Viktoria Hyddmark, Vicky Cadge, Margie Chamberlin and Isabela Mills Pinto earned the win, finishing the race in a time of 1:44.06, which is a new League best. Gardner-Webb’s relay team (Sarah Steadman, Stepheni Stadnik, Rachel Warkentin and Corey Hughey) finished second with a time of 1:44.34, notching second in the League and Georgia Southern (Lindsay Goodman, Ashley White, Kristen Haudenschild and Courtney Martz) swam in for third at 1:45.00, rounding out the top three in the Conference.
College of Charleston’s Dmitriy Gorin won the 400-yard IM, in a Conference leading time of 4:02.95. Finishing second was Davidson’s David Kerman, who clocked in at 4:03.43 for second best in the League and coming in third was College of Charleston’s Chris Lietzow (4:06.93). On the women’s side, Florida Gulf Coast captured the gold with Rosy Murray finishing first (4:18.73), her second award of the week and earning the top spot in the Conference. Georgia Southern’s Lauren Parr came in second (4:25.75) and touching the wall third was Davidson’s Anna Stringfield, who clocked in at 4:25.88.
Gardner-Webb’s Patrick Elerding earned the gold medal, swimming an impressive time of 48.93, in the men’s 100-yard butterfly for his second medal of the meet. Davidson’s Miller Williams captured the silver with a time of 49.65, while College of Charleston’s Patrick Jones secured third-place in a time of 50.48. On the women’s side, Davidson’s Emily Castle swam a Conference best time in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.62 to earn the win and her second medal thus far. Finishing second was Florida Gulf Coast’s Margie Chamberlin, who clocked in at 55.23 and coming in third was Davidson’s Courtney Sanders, who touched the wall at 55.60.
In the men’s 200-yard freestyle, Davidson’s pair of Curtis Chaney (1:37.72) and Merritt Peele (1:39.30) grabbed the gold and sliver, topping the Conference with each finish. That was Chaney’s second gold and Peele’s second medal of the Championship. College of Charleston’s Matthew Sherrier secured the bronze and his second medal, finishing in 1:40.04, rounding out the League’s top three times. On the women’s side North Florida’s Lyn Ann Nelson, who earned a Division I NCAA-B cut time and set the Conference record, grabbed gold with a time of 1:47.52. This is her second medal this week. Florida Gulf Coast’s Leah Daniel earned her second medal in the meet, touching the wall in 1:48.73 for the silver and second-place CCSA time, and Davidson’s Lindsey Martin rounded out the top three (1:50.15) for her second medal this week.
In the men’s 100-yard breaststroke, College of Charleston’s Randy Buchanan finished first with a CCSA best time, reaching the wall at 54.69, and earning an NCAA Division I B cut for his second medal of the meet. Gardner-Webb’s pair of Patrick Elerding (56.60) and Casey Brutus (57.76) rounded out the top three times. That was Elerding’s second medal of the Championship. In the women’s 100-yard breaststroke each of the top finishers rounded out top the top three in the Conference, with Florida Gulf Coast’s Vicky Cadge (1:03.60) earning the gold for the second time this week and teammate Catrina Silveira taking the silver. Finishing third in a time of 1:05.02 was Gardner-Webb’s Stepheni Stadnik.
In the men’s 100-yard backstroke, Davidson’s Scott Frantz Jr. finished with a season best, 50.28 to grab the gold and his second medal this week while teammate Geoff Peitz picked up the silver, touching in 50.51. College of Charleston’s Chris Rogers (51.08) rounded out third place. On the women’s side, Gardner-Webb’s Corey Hughey finished in first-place for her second medal of the week, setting a CCSA top time of 50.40, and capturing an NCAA Division I B cut time while Florida Gulf Coast’s Viktoria Hyddmark earned second (55.79) and Gardner-Webb’s Sarah Steadman grabbed third (57.04). Hyddmark and Steadman round out the CCSA top times with their finishes.
In the men’s one-meter dive, Davidson’s Ben Lane grabbed the gold medal setting a Conference record with a point total of 285.10, College of Charleston’s Jeffrey Jankowski stole the silver with score of 181.40 and teammate Jordan Toopes earned bronze with 146.10 points. Lane also won the gold in yesterday’s 3-meter event with Toopes and Jankowski rounding out second and third-place.
In the last event of the night, the 800-yard freestyle relay, the Davison men (Curtis Chaney, Patrick Whitman, Brad Carman and Merritt Peele) locked in first with a time of 6:43.92 for a top time in the CCSA. College of Charleston (Matthew Sherrier, Chris Lietzow, Andy Puciaty and Dmitriy Gorin) finished second in 6:50.65 and Howard (Jules Graham, Miguel Orellana, Damjan Strbac and Isaiah Allen) swam in third, clocking in at 6:59.68, representing the Bison’s first medal of the Championship. On the women’s side, Florida Gulf Coast (Rosy Murray, Rachael Rein, Margrete Ulvestad and Leah Daneil) earned the first-place finish with a time of 7:21.26 for first-place in the League. Davidson (Courtney Sanders, Caitlin Sheetz, Casey VanTassell and Anna Stringfield) came in second, clocking in at 7:31.64 and Georgia Southern (Caroline Bevillard, Lauren Parr, Jordyn Pasley and Ali Campbell) completed the race third with a time of 7:36.51.
The CCSA Championships will resume tomorrow morning at 10:00am.
