Washington College Takes Two From McDaniel

CHESTERTOWN, Md. , February 7th, 2009           

Shoremen Swim Past Green Terror, 125-67
Freshman Nick Longworth (Media, PA/Strath Haven) and sophomore Matt Violette (Westbrook, ME/Westbrook) each won two individual events as the Washington College men's swim team defeated Centennial Conference rival McDaniel, 125-67, this afternoon at Casey Swim Center.

Longworth won the 200 freestyle in a Washington College season-best time of 1:51.69 and was first in the 500 freestyle in 5:15.22. Violette finished first in the 100 backstroke in 57.25 and the 200 individual medley in a WC season-best time of 2:04.97.

Freshman Austin Auger (McLean, VA/Langley) won the 100 breaststroke in a WC season-best time of 1:03.69 to become the Shoremen's eighth-fastest swimmer ever in the event, while junior Dylan Pollock (Savannah, GA/Benedictine Military) won the 100 butterfly (55.34) and junior Chris Soper (Towson, MD/Loyola Blakefield) captured the 100 freestyle (51.03). Auger was also second in the 50 freestyle in 23.95, while Pollock was also second in the 500 freestyle in 5:26.64.

Violette, Auger, Pollock, and senior Phil Munger (Devon, PA/Conestoga) won the 200 medley relay in 1:45.67. Swimming as an exhibition, senior Dan Wentzel (Exton, PA/Henderson), Longworth, Munger, and Soper posted the fastest time in the 200 freestyle relay (1:34.30).

Wentzel was second in a pair of individual events, the 200 freestyle (1:52.95) and the 100 freestyle (51.30). Freshman Johnny Helenek (Gaithersburg, MD/Gaithersburg) finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.13, while junior Dan Beadell (Timonium, MD/Loyola Blakefield) placed second in the 1000 freestyle in 10:58.90.

The Shoremen (6-4, 2-3 Centennial) return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet at Swarthmore.

Shorewomen Sink Green Terror, 129-73
Sophomore Rachel Glasser (Silver Spring, MD/Springbrook) broke the pool record in the 100 butterfly as host Washington College downed visiting McDaniel College, 129-73, in Centennial Conference women's swimming action this afternoon at Casey Swim Center.

Glasser swam a 58.94 to win the 100 butterfly, set a new pool record, and become the Shorewomen's third-fastest swimmer ever in the event. She also won the 500 freestyle in 5:21.75. Freshman Mary Stroman (Bala Cynwyd, PA/Friends Central) won the 200 freestyle in 2:04.81 and the 100 freestyle in 57.70. Freshman Laura Risell (Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) won the 200 individual medley in 2:26.36 and placed second in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.13. Senior Kimber Shoemaker (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.35.

Shoemaker, Glasser, junior Kathy Gerhart (Phoenixville, PA/Phoenixville Area), and Stroman won the 200 medley relay in 1:59.47. Gerhart, freshman Morgan Phillips (Charlottesville, VA/Albermarle), senior Rebecca Lee (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield) and freshman Ellen Liebenow (Sellersville, PA/Pennridge) captured the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.73.

Phillips took second place in a pair of individual events, the 50 freestyle (26.93) and the 500 freestyle (5:44.36). Gerhart was second in the 100 butterfly in 1:00.12, while senior Anna Green (St. Louis, MO/Principia) placed second in the 1000 freestyle in 11:43.14. Senior Cara Choplin (West Deptford, NJ/Bishop Eustace) was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:32.14, while freshman Kelly Dunbar (Williamsburg,VA/Lafayette) placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.35.

The Shorewomen (10-3, 3-3 Centennial) return to action Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. Centennial Conference meet at Swarthmore.

Washington sweeps McDaniel
Matt Violette won three times to lead Washington (Md.) to a 125-67 victory over McDaniel in Centennial Conference (CC) men’s swimming action on Saturday.

The Shorewomen (10-3, 3-3 CC) also downed the Green Terror (1-8, 1-6 CC), 129-73.

On the men’s side, Washington (6-4, 2-3 CC) notched victories in eight events while McDaniel (2-6, 0-6 CC) took the other three events.

Violette was part of the meet-opening victory in the 200 medley relay that swam a time of 1:45.67 before touching first in the 200 IM (2:04.97) and 100 backstroke (57.25).

Dylan Pollack, Nick Longworth and Austin Auger won twice for the Shoremen. Pollack and Auger were part of the 200 medley relay before winning the 100 butterfly (55.34) and 100 breaststroke (1:03.69), respectively. Longworth touched first in the 200 and 500 freestyle events with times of 1:51.69 and 5:15.22, respectively.

Stephen Gomez (Charlottesville, Va./Albermmarle) touched first in the 1000 free (10:25.00) and James Eu (Reston, Va./Hargrave Military Academy) won the 50 free (22.80) to pace McDaniel.

For the women, Rachel Glasser won three times, including individual wins in the 100 butterfly (58.94) and 500 free (5;21.75).

Glasser also teamed with three-time winner Mary Stroman and two-time winners Kimber Shoemaker and Kathy Gerhart to win the 200 medley relay with a combined time of 1:59.47.

Stroman won the 100 and 200 freestyle events while Shoemaker was victorious in the 100 backstroke and Gerhart was part of the 200 free relay win.

Rachel Walega (Ambler, Pa./Wissahickon) won twice for the Green Terror, touching first in the 50 free with a time of 26.43 and 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10.72.

Jessica Fry (St. Mary’s, Ga./Camden County) was victorious in the 1000 free (11:14.38).

McDaniel returns to action at the CC Championships on Feb. 20-22 at Franklin & Marshall.
