New Hampshire Squeaks by Vermont

The University of Vermont swimming and diving team led going into the final event against New Hampshire on Sunday, but the Wildcats won the 400 freestyle relay and topped the Catamounts 152-148 in the clash between America East counterparts. The loss is the second straight for Vermont, as it falls to 6-4 on the season and 2-3 against league opponents.

"Who ever won the last relay, won the meet. Our girls fought hard today and I am very proud of them," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer.

Senior Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.) and junior Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) led the Catamounts with two wins each on the day. MacMillan was victorious in both the 200 (1:54.78) and 500 (5:03.52) freestyle events. In the 200 MacMillan just touched out teammate Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.), who finished second in 1:54.83. The Cats went 1-2-3 in the 500, as freshman Kailey Gardner (Ithaca, N.Y.) finished second and sophomore Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill.) came in third.

Weaver swept the two backstroke events on Sunday, winning the 100 (57.91) and 200 (2:04.46). Gardner also earned a victory in the 1,000 freestyle with a time of 10:36.07. A pair of sophomores earned first place finishes, as Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C.) won the 200 butterfly (2:08.45) and Lauren Colby (Andover, Mass.) won the three-meter dive with a score of 225.45.
