Longnecker Invite (Grove City)

The Washington & Jefferson College men's and women's swimming and diving squads placed second on Saturday at the two-day James E. Longnecker Invitational hosted by Grove City College.

The host Wolverines won both team championships, collecting 1,132 points in the women’s standings and 1,693.5 points in the men’s championship.  W&J finished second in the women’s invitational with 619 points, while the Presidents’ men garnered 868 points during their second-place showing.

California University of Pennsylvania (603) placed third in the nine-team women’s invitational followed by Lock Haven (560), Misericordia (348), East Stroudsburg (346), Hiram (140), Findlay (67) and Cabrini (12).

Misericordia (552.5) claimed third in the men’s standings, while Hiram (358) and Cabrini (45) rounded out the five-team field.

The women’s team was highlighted by sophomore Bethany Haver (Akron, Ohio/Harvey S. Firestone), who was the only President to earn first-place honors at the two-day event.  Haver won the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events after posting scores of 254.30 and 243.00, respectively.

Senior Luke Morgan (Presto, Pa./South Fayette) and freshman John Szott (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) notched a pair of top-five finishes in the men’s diving events.  Morgan finished second on the 1-meter board with a score of 200.85 and third on the 3-meter board (198.45), while Szott earned second-place on the 3-meter board (211.20) and third-place on the 1-meter board (199.90).

Sophomore Brittany Vogel (Butler, Pa./Butler) placed second in the 400 IM (4:49.48) and fourth in the 200 IM (2:15.08), while classmate Katie Steider (Cochranton, Pa./Meadville) touched second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.08.

Freshman Joe Weiland (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) and sophomore Andy Rish (North East, Pa./Cathedral Prep) finished second and third, respectively, in the 100 backstroke.  Weiland finished in 55.53 seconds, while Rish collected a time of 56.26. 

Sophomore Michael Boutwell (Winchester, Va./John Handley) also picked up a third place finish for the Red & Black in the 1.650 free, finishing the race in a time of 18:07.48.  Junior Brandon Smith (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) earned a pair of fourth place finishes in the 200 IM (2:03.88) and 400 IM (4:26.25).The Washington & Jefferson College men's and women's swimming and diving squads placed second on Saturday at the two-day James E.
