The Wingate University men's and women's swimming teams
maintained their leads after the second day of the SCAD College
Invitational Friday (Dec. 4) at the Chatham County Aquatic Center.
Wingate leads the 12-team women's field with 507 points after 20 events in
the 36-event, three-day event, 149 more than second-place Florida Southern
College. The Bulldogs also tops in the nine-team men's meet with 630
points. Darton College is in second place with 307. Hosts Savannah College
of Art and Design is in third place in the women's competition with 317
while the Bees are fourth in the men's event with 231.
Nat Emmett picked up the first win for SCAD in the meet as he claimed the
men's 200-yard breaststroke event with a time of 2:10.73. Teammates Sam
Crawford finished in third place (2:15.18) in the event while Stephen
Sullivan came in fourth (2:15.46). Sullivan also picked up a fifth-place
finish in the 100 backstroke (54.87) while Geoffrey Byers registered a
sixth-place finish in the 400 individual medley (4:25.28).
In the women's competition, Melanie Futscher tallied a pair of third-place
finishes - 400 individual medley (4:44.02) and 200 breaststroke (2:28.73)
- for SCAD. Kelsey Brosseau placed in fifth place for SCAD in the 400
individual medley (4:50.42) while Zenobia Duncan did the same in the 200
breaststroke (2:31.29). Mary Ashley Krogh came in seventh place in both
the 50 freestyle (25.82) and 100 backstroke (1:03.14) events for the Bees.
Gianna Grace also picked up a seventh-place finish in the 100 butterfly
(1:01.35) while Tori Aboud finished eighth in the 200 freestyle (2:02.39).
The Invitational concludes Saturday (Dec. 4) with preliminaries at 10 a.m.
with the finals beginning at 4 p.m. Events to be competed include the 400
freestyle relay, 200 individual medley, 500 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100
breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 100 freestyle, and 200 medley relay.

The Wingate University men’s and women’s swimming teams continue to lead the SCAD Invitational following Friday’s events. The women hold a 507-358 lead over second-place Florida Southern, while the men lead 630-308 over Darton College. Both teams have relay wins as well as multiple individual standouts.
On the men’s side, senior captain Mason Norman had an individual win in the 50 Freestyle, as well as a hand in the victorious 400 Medley Relay and the 200 Freestyle Relay. The women were led by sophomore Malin Kesmark and freshman Matilda Larsson, as both had a relay victory as well as an individual top-three finish.
The men also had big performances from fellow seniors Gus Chagas, Daniel De Francisco and Kyle Corcoran. Chagas was a part of both victorious relays as well as finishing second in his signature 200 Freestyle. De Francisco was a part of the 200 Freestyle Relay and finished in the top three of the 200 Freestyle. Corcoran won his 400 Individual Medley over fellow Bulldog Marcello Machado. Sophomore Lee Sousa was victorious in his 100 Backstroke as well as being a part of the 400 Medley Relay.
Several women stepped up, proving the depth of the team. Junior Sarah Supcoe took second in her 400 Individual Medley. Senior captain Samantha Vencl was top five in her 100 Backstroke as well as being a part of two strong relays. Junior All-American Cheryl Vaccaro was also a part of the two relays as well as earning two top eight finishes in her individual races.
The SCAD College Invitational concludes Saturday. Following the SCAD event, the Bulldogs will take a break for final exams Dec. 7-12 before departing for their annual Florida training trip after Christmas.
