UNLV - Day 4
The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted a total of three victories on the final day of competition at the 2009 Finis Collegiate Invitational on Monday, held in Long Beach, Calif., and hosted by Cal Lutheran University.
Kier Maitland turned in a time of 15:02.16 to claim first in the 1650 free while the Rebels earned four other runner-up finishes on the men's side. Chris Riley finished second in the 200 back with a time of 1:51.51 and Andrew Morrell was runner-up in the 200 breast with a time of 2:04.32. Daniel Egly claimed second in the 200 fly with a time of 1:48.91 while Calan Eldridge, Charlie Tapp, Tyler Bush and Steven Nelms would post a second-place finish in the 400 free relay with a time of 2:59.24.
On the women’s side, Ana Dangalakova and Carmen Robb each claimed an individual victory, while UNLV would finish with three more runner-up performances. Dangalakova won the 200 back with a time of 2:00.95 and Robb touched the wall first in the 200 fly with a time of 2:03.91. Shawnee Landolt finished second in the 1650 free with a time of 17:05.70 while Marva Harpak was runner-up in the 100 free with a time 51.11. Marva Harpak, Friderika Szel, Haley Porter and Andree Anne Genereux finished second in the 400 free relay with a time of 3:27.39.
On the men's team standings, UNLV finished second with 1,811 points out of eight teams, while UC Santa Barbara finished first with 2,262 points. UNLV was just 18 points out of first on the women's side, scoring 2,159 points to finish behind UCSB (2,177 points).
The Rebels will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 19, when the women's squad goes to California to take on San Diego State at 1 pm.
UCSB - Day 4
Both the UC Santa Barbara men and women’s swim teams took first
place on Monday as action concluded at the three-day Finis Collegiate Invitational at Belmont
Plaza.
The Gaucho women edged out second-place UNLV by 18 points, outscoring the Rebels, 2,177-2,159. The men blew out the competition scoring 2,262 points. The second-place team was once again UNLV, which finished 451 points behind the Gauchos. UCSB’s final day of the meet was highlighted by six NCAA Championship consideration times.
Sophomore Tim Freeman posted a first-place finish in the 200 breaststroke while also posting a “B” qualifying time of 1:59.60. On the women’s side, Emily Adamczyk also posted a “B” standard in the 200 breast with her time of 2:16.34.
In the 100 free, Anne Marie May was able to post her second “B” qualifying time of the season in the 100 free with a time of 49.44, her leadoff split in the 400 free relay also met the NCAA consideration standard.
Chris Peterson won the men’s 100 free in 44.91 seconds, just out-touching teammate Kevin Ferguson, who placed second in 45.01.
Danny McClary rounded out the individual first-place finishes, taking the top spot in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:48.85.
The Gauchos completed the meet with back-to-back wins in the 400 free relays. The
women’s team of May, Naomi Javanifard, Kendall Neely and Courtney Bauer finished in 3:23.34, a NCAA consideration time. The men’s relay of Ferguson, Scott Vogelgesang, Chris Peterson and Ryan Hanni touched the wall in 2:58.46, another “B” qualifying time.
During the three days of the Finis Collegiate Invitational, UCSB men’s and women’s swim teams posted a combined 14 NCAA Championship consideration times, 20 first-place finishes and one school record. May also posted the best time by a collegiate swimmer this season in the 50 free on Friday.
UNLV - Day 3
The UNLV men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted a total of three victories on the third day of competition at the 2009 Finis Collegiate Invitational, held in Long Beach, Calif., and hosted by Cal Lutheran University.
UNLV swept both of the night's relays on the men's side, with David Seiler, Andrew Morrell, Cody Roberts and Charlie Tapp posting a time of 1:29.96 in the 200 medley relay. The Rebels also finished the night with a win in the 800 free relay, with Kyle Virva, Kier Maitland, David Seiler and Calan Eldridge claimed first in a time of 6:42.35. Seiler won the 100 fly in 48.67, while Maitland was the fastest college swimmer in the 200 free in 1:38.94, finishing behind unattached and Rebel alumni Richard Hortness who won the event.
On the women's side, UNLV would post a total of five runner-up finishes, beginning with the 200 medley relay squad made up of Ana Dangalakova, Kelsey Clarke, Emma Gustafsson and Madison Rousell that finished in a time of 1:45.43. Dangalakova would add a second-place swim in the 400 IM (4:24.71), while Marva Harpak was second in the 200 free (1:50.14) and Katie Matulic was runner-up in the 100 fly (56.80). UNLV also placed second in the 800 free relay, as Harpak, Friderika Szel, Lara Sreibers and Nakayla Chan touched the wall in 7:30.39.
In the men's team standings, UNLV is second with 1,224 points out of eight teams, while UC Santa Barbara is first with 1,503 points. UNLV also stands in second on the women's side with 1,434 points, with UCSB also leading with 1,486.5 points.
UCSB - Day 3
During the first two days of the Finis Collegiate Invitational being held at Belmont Plaza, the UC Santa Barbara men’s and women’s swim teams posted a combined
eight NCAA Championship consideration times, 14 first-place finishes and one school record.
Sunday’s highlights include Jessica Schwalb’s school-record setting performance in the 400 individual medley. Schwalb won the event in 4:17.88, which is a “B” qualifying standard and
breaks the school record of 4:20.43 set by her sister, Jen Schwalb in 2004.
Schwalb wasn’t the only Gaucho to reach a NCAA consideration time on the second day of
the meet, Naomi Javanifard won the 100 butterfly in a NCAA consideration time of 54.43 and
followed that up with a first place finish in the 100 backstroke (56.07).
Katie Stover rounded out the women’s individual first-place finishes on Sunday, winning the
200 free in 1:49.33, which is just .11 seconds off of the NCAA “B” qualifying standard in the
event.
In the relays, the women won both the 200 medley and 800 free. Javanifard, Anne Marie May,
Miranda Schneider and Kendall Neely posted a time of 1:43.58 in the 200 medley. In the 800
free relay, Kelsey Lewis, Katie Stover, Courtney Bauer and Katie Tomkinson finished in
7:29.35.
On the men’s side, Tim Freeman won the 100 breaststroke in 55.25, a “B” qualifying
standard. Kevin Ferguson also achieved a NCAA consideration time with his first-place finish
in the 100 backstroke (48.84).
On Saturday, the Gauchos got the meet off to a strong start with back-to-back wins in the
200 freestyle relays. The women’s “A” relay team made up of May, Neely, Javanifard and Bauer
took first with a time of 1:31.94, which is “B” qualifying standard.
The men followed suit and the team of Chris Peterson, Kevin Kuhn, Ferguson and Ryan Hanni
posted a mark of 1:20.98, another NCAA “B” qualifying time.
In the 500 free, Emma Hunt and Meagan Brown qualified for the event’s finals. Hunt took
fourth with a time of 5:01.88 and Brown finished behind her in fifth (5:03.64). On the men’s
side, four Gauchos made the 500 free final. Scott Vogelgesang had the top finish, coming in
third with a mark of 4:35.93 (he swam the event’s preliminary heat in 4:34.60). Joe Plume
took fourth (4:37.92), Ryan Garcia took sixth (4:40.12) and Brett Chamberlain was seventh
(4:40.27).
The UCSB men had an even better showing in the 200 individual medley with five swimmers
making the event’s final. The Gauchos swept second through sixth places in the event and
Danny McClary led the pack finishing second in 1:51.00. Brandon Schilling took third
(1:52.04), Freeman placed fourth (1:52.62) and Mitchell Long (1:53.33) and Evan Simoni
(1:53.46) took fifth and sixth, respectively.
Schwalb was the Gauchos’ top finisher in the women’s 200 IM, placing second in 2:04.42
while Brittany Borowitz took fifth (2:06.11).
The first individual event win was by May in the 50 free. The senior touched the wall in 22.34
seconds, the second best time posted by a collegiate swimmer this season and another “B”
qualifying standard. Teammates Javanifard (23.36) and Neely (23.38) rounded out the top-
three finishes and Bauer took sixth after finishing in 23.82.
Peterson followed May’s lead and took first in the men’s 50 free with a time of 20.34, a “B”
qualifying standard. Kuhn and Ferguson placed fifth and sixth with marks of 20.62 and
20.64, respectively.
Saturday’s final event was the 400 freestyle relay and the Gauchos once again swept the top
finishes. Katie Stover, Emily Adamczyk, Javanifard and May picked up first for the UCSB
women, finishing in 3:46.27. The team of Ferguson, Freeman, McClary and Peterson got the
job done on the men’s side, posting a top finish in 3:17.40.
