The Georgia Tech Swimming & Diving teams began the season with a pair of convincing wins over Florida Atlantic and Florida Gulf Coast Universities Saturday afternoon at the FAU pool. The women’s team defeated FAU 201.50-93.50 and FGCU 177.0-123.0. The men, meanwhile, defeated FAU 204.50-93.50. Additionally, Florida Gulf Coast notched its first-ever win against Division I competition with a 162-128 upending of Florida Atlantic.
“This was a great team effort today,” head coach Stu Wilson said. “Everybody did an excellent job racing and I can already see how their hard training has paid off. This tells me that they are very focused early in the season and I know we will continue to get better as the season progresses.”
Heidi Hatteberg, Lisa Pucci, Agatha Kwasnik and Noah Copeland each won two swimming events apiece for the Jackets. In diving, Hannah Krimm and Jacob Tzegaegbe won both the one-meter and three-meter events. Krimm has already qualified for the NCAA Zone meet as she won the one-meter (286.85) and three-meter (301.05) events. For the men, Tzegaegbe also won both events with scores of 250.95 and 224.20, respectively.
The day began with both the men’s and women’s squads winning the 200-yard medley relay. The women’s team of Hatteberg, Pucci, Jordan Evans and Kwasnik won in a time of 1:48.09, while the men’s squad of Ilia Ayzenshtok, Mickey Malul. Sullivan Lynch and Garrett Robberson touched the wall in 1:34.31.
In the 200-free, Sarah Broadley (1:52.37) won on the women’s side, while Copeland (1:41.15) was victorious for the men. Hatteberg (58.49) was victorious in the 100-back, while Pucci won the 100-breast in a time of 1:07.36. Malul won the 100-breast for the men in a time of 57.60.
Also victorious for the Yellow Jackets were Ralph Long (1:53.47 in the 200-fly), Kwasnik (24.24 in the 50-free), Robberson (21.07 in the 50-free), Kwasnik (51.75 in the 100-free), Copeland (45.73 in the 100-free), Hatteberg (2:05.29 in the 200-back), Pucci (2:27.08 in the 200-breast) and Matthew Vaughan (2:10.38 in the 200-breast).
To close out the meet, the Tech team of Roberson, Lynch, Johnny Hagaman and Long were victorious in the 400-free relay. They finished in a time of 3:10.36.
Georgia Tech will return to action on October 10 with a dual ACC meet at Clemson.
While Georgia Tech Swept, the battle between FGCU and FAU was fierce, but ultimately FGCU came out with victory.
The FGCU Swimming and diving team completed their first regular season meet with a victory over FAU this weekend. FGCU’s 200 yard medley relay, comprised of Viktoria Hyddmark, Cat Silveira, Margie Chamberlin, and Rachael Rein came storming off the blocks with a 2nd place finish (1:49.15) in the first event of the day.
Leading the way for the Eagles was freshman Rosy Murray and junior Margie Chamberlin. Rosy Murray set a freshman record with a first place finish in the 1000 Freestyle (10:24.80) while also setting both a freshman and school record with a first place finish in the 400 IM (4:26.68). Junior Margie Chamberlin broke two school records, one in the 100 Butterfly (59.96) and another in the 200 Butterfly (2:02.93).
Other outstanding performers for the Eagles including Viktoria Hyddmark, Courtney Gallo, and Cat Silveira. Hyddmark swam a 2:07.29 in the 200 Backstroke which beat all of FAU’s swimmings. Courtney Gallo and Cat Silveira also had solid performances on the day. Gallo, a senior and team captain, finished ahead of all other FAU swimmers in the 1000 Freestyle (10:37.97) while Silveira competed the 100 Breaststroke in 1:07.59.
In the last event of the day, the 400 yard Freestyle relay, FGCU beat all other competitors with a solid 3:33.92 swam by Margie Chamberlin (54.02), Margrete Ulvestad (53.40), Leah Daniel (54.20), and Rachael Rein (52.30).
Pacing the Eagle divers were Gaby Shaw with a 1 meter score of 229.45 and Karmin McNamara with a 3 meter score of 201.4.
