Vermont Women Sweep Army, Stony Brook

WEST POINT, NY , October 3rd, 2008
Junior Colleen Clark (Unionville, Conn.) and sophomore Kate Weaver (South Burlington, Vt.) each earned a pair of victories to lead the University of Vermont swimming and diving team to a pair of wins in the Cats opening meet of the season. The Catamounts got a strong effort out of their freshmen class as they defeated Army 100-40 and topped America East rival Stony Brook 94-46.

With the two wins, Vermont has now won 11 straight regular season meets dating back to last season and defeated Stony Brook for a third consecutive year.

"Our team swam very well today against two programs that have very rich swimming histories," said Vermont head coach Gerry Cournoyer. "I am thrilled with where we are as a team right now."

Vermont started the meet by taking first in six of the opening seven events and going 1-2 in five of them. The Catamounts opened the competition by taking the top two slots in the 200 medley relay as the team of Weaver, Ashley Gillespie (Ithaca, N.Y.), Avery Pittman (Raleigh, N.C.) and Rachel Kent (Mystic, Conn.) finished first in a time of 1:51.51, while the team of Kaitlyn Evarts (Vergennes, Vt.), Caitlin Dowd (Setauket, N.Y.), Ele Wilson (Portland, Ore.) and Hannah Center (Chevy Chase, Md.) broke the UVM freshmen record with a second place showing in 1:54.20.

Clark won her first of two events of the evening in the 200 free (1:54.92) and was followed in second by freshman Katie Heenan (Clarendon Hills, Ill.). Weaver won the 100 back (58.39), while Evarts came in second. The 100 breaststroke saw Gillespie and Dowd take the top two spots.

Pittman and Wilson placed first and second in the 200 butterfly and then were followed by Clark winning the 50 freestyle (25.07). Weaver earned her second win of the night in the 200 backstroke (2:07.50). Vermont wrapped up the meet by winning the 400 freestyle relay in a time of 3:37.49 with the team made up of Clark, Molly MacMillan (Doylestown, Pa.), Weaver and Kent.

Also picking up wins against Army were Clark in the 100 free and Heenan in the 500 free, while Pittman took first in the 100 fly against Stony Brook. Charlotte Ford (Greenwich, Conn.) placed second in the three-meter dive for the Cats with a score of 190.20.

Vermont returns to action on October 25 when the Cats travel to Boston, Mass. for a meet against conference rivals Boston University and Binghamton.
