UCSD Swims To Win Over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps

The UC San Diego swimming and diving team started the 2008-09 season with a victory on Saturday at Canyonview Pool, defeating Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.  The men's side won 15-of-16 events, earning 223.5 points to 75.5 for the Athenas.  The Triton women were also dominant, winning 14-of-16 events for a 202-90 margin of victory.  Dan Perdew and Steven Hardy won three individual events each to pace the men's squad, while Anju Shimura led the way for the women's team with wins in both the 100 back and 200 back events.

 

The men's 200 relay team of Hardy, Brandon Maryatt, Andy Islip, and Todd Langland started things off right with a winning time of 1:37.51.  Hardy would also collect wins in the 200 free with a time of 1:48.21, the 200 back in a time of 1:59.10, and the 200 IM at 2:00.09.  Dan Perdew would touch first in the 50 free (21.38), 100 free (47.83), and 100 fly (54.82).  The 400 free relay team, comprised of Brandon Maryatt, Todd Langland, Blake Langland, and Perdew would end the day in victory for UCSD with a time of 3:12.60.

 

Anju Shimura posted the only sub-minute time in the 100 back, finishing the event in 59.01, before putting together a winning time of 2:07.99 in the 200 back.  Shannon Simonds and Alexandra Henley also posted strong wins for the UCSD women.  Simonds' time of 5:09.44 in the 500 free was almost 10 seconds faster than her next closest competitor, while Henley's mark of 2:10.71 was nearly four seconds better than runner-up Neda Nguyen in the 200 IM event.  The women's 400 free relay team of Aubrey Panis, Simonds, Ashtyn Douglas, and Shimura would win their event with a time of 3:33.36.

 

The UCSD women's swimming and diving team will return to action on November 1 at 1 p.m.  The complete UC San Diego squad will face off against Cal State Bakersfield and Seattle on November 8 and against UC Davis on November 9.  All three upcoming meets will take place at Canyonview Pool on the UCSD campus.
